TrakAudio has demonstrated audible differences between the new 10MX and the 10M. We have extensively tested and A/B'd both clocks using the Burl Mothership and Antelope Audios Orion 32. The improvement both the 10M and 10MX added to the Burl and Orion is clear and present but switching between clocks is quite negligible. They appear to be equal and indiscernible sound wise. While what we heard between our tracked and played back recordings had minute differences it was hard to debate which clock was better or worse. We tracked material using the 10M and played back on the 10M and it appeared to be less 3D but warmer and more pleasing to the ear then the new 10MX. HiFi and a more mastered sound would be words used to describe the 10MX. The same material tracked with the 10MX and played back on the 10MX sounded as if the low end region was tighter but less pleasing but at the same time a more finished and mastered sound. Here is another test that seemed biased but still a test showing to be best of both worlds. While material that was tracked and played back from the same clock had differences we feel material tracked with the 10M and played back with the 10MX was the best scenario offering the greatest sound stage and best of both worlds. This seems to be a biased test as we can't tell if it was the 10M tracking or 10MX playback responsible for this "Best Scenario Outcome". We understand this is an unrealistic approach due to cost factor. The question to our engineers was is the 10M responsible for this improvement that made the playback material sound better on the 10MX or is it the 10MX/s clock? Tracking with the 10MX and playing back on the 10M did not show better results and we feel the 10MX did accomplish better soundstage upon playback then the 10M. Playing back on the 10MX and tracking with the 10MX seemed similar and almost exact to the 10M tracking 10MX playback. In the end we do feel the 10MX may have a slight edge as this was just a test tracking material in a short period of time but did show better results using the 10MX. Longer and more extensive tests may show different results. It was unanimous though the 10M tracked material played back on the 10MX appeared to have the best qualities of all recordings. We could not tell if the more pleasing sound was due to the new 10MX or that the material tracked with the 10M appeared to be warmer during playback on the 10MX. Both clocks have shown to our engineers as well as clients to improve soundstage to our convertors and while we hear tighter lows and a more 3D open sound using external clocking we could not hear a discernible difference on which unit was better or worse. If budget was not a factor and TrakAudio was not selling 10MX's in our showroom the 10M would be a better choice cost wise. Best of both worlds would be to own both. Track with the 10M, playback with the 10MX. As this is an unrealistic approach due to budget we felt that even showing this test is unrealistic and splitting hairs at this point. For those after the best performance TrakAudio offers the ideal solution for those who demand only the best outcome for their situation. The sound tests performed by TrakAudio are tests in our control room and live rooms by our engineers so different results could vary depending on source material being tracked and played back in different acoustic environments. As the 10MX was an upgrade to TrakAudio the price factor was not that great of a deal then when we first purchased the 10M for our showroom. To demo for clients new clock technology adding the 10MX is a necessity to TrakAudio versus a budget minded purchase. If a user is looking to add a better clock to their convertors, TrakAudio feels the10M might be a better and obvious choice. While the compactness of the 10MX is nice the price tag of a used 10M is even better. The 10MX offers incredible 3D SoundStage while the 10M offers pretty much the same technology to our ears. Here is a mint 10M in the original box for a fraction of what a new 10MX cost. If you are someone that needs a smaller frame clock for road purpose or into mastering the 10MX is also available upon request. Either choice we feel is a step up in performance to internal clocking and an added feature to both the Burl and Orion 32. Other convertors may offer different results but to us Burl and Orion 32 conversion utilizing Antelope Audio Technology is about the best you can get.Feel free to email TrakAudio with any questions you may have as well as scheduling an appointment to demo both clocks.
