Here is a 1928 Conn 28B "Concert Grand" trumpet (serial number 221092). This is a big, heavy horn designed for power and control. Here is what Conn said in their catalog at the time:
This trumpet has the largest bore of any of our trumpets and heavy gauge brass is used in its construction. It is especially designed for those "heavy" players who have been accustomed to "filling" a large bore and who desire an unusually big, powerful trumpet tone. The richness and magnificence of its tone is really unusual and while the bore is large, it has a satisfactory resistance which just suits the "heavy" player. Its scale is even and flexible and for a trumpet of this size and bore, it is played with surprisingly little effort. Many of these trumpets are being used in the larger symphonies and in military bands. The instrument is 19½" long, weighs 2¼ lbs and has a 4 5/8" bell. Apparently the 28B is a "Low Pitch" version, the "High Pitch" version is called the 29B.
This horn is made mostly from yellow brass, while the valve casings are copper. The bore of the horn is .485" (Conn #2 1/2 bore). The bell is 4 5/8". The engraving is in pretty good shape, and reads "Made By/ C G Conn Ltd/ Elkhart-IND/ USA". This horn looks beautiful and plays very well. The valves have like-new compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of the horn, there are a few small dings and some light rippling, and also some very light pitting. One of the pearls in a bottom valve cap is also cracked. All this is visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now--if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This trumpet comes with a mouthpiece in good condition and a new lightweight case. All horns are located at Silver & Brass Music Shop710 N.
