• Up for sale, a 1999 Gibson SG Special in excellent condition and in perfect working order with a rare deep gloss nitro walnut finish! Light and resonant at 6lbs 12oz, this SG has great clarity, power and harmonic richness. Raucous and lively in the bridge position and capable of smooth, darker tonalities at the neck, it's easy to see why the SG has been a Gibson favorite for decades. Gibsons produced in the late 1990s and early 2000s are quickly becoming regarded as a brief yet notable era of tight quality control and excellent craftsmanship, when features like rosewood fretboards, vintage style tuning machines, and hand soldered wiring harnesses were still the norm. Professionally setup strung with fresh 10-46 strings, this SG truly sounds and feels as good as it looks! The quarter sawn mahogany neck has a very comfortable profile with a C shape that has just the right amount of chunk while still feeling manageable and easy to fret. The action is low and slinky with near perfect frets that show only the faintest wear in the first position and virtually no wear up the neck. Gibson refers to the fretwire as "medium jumbo" and while the guitar does have prominent, rounded crowns on the frets, the width is more akin to a vintage Gibson fret (narrower overall than what would widely be considered 'jumbo'), and a more intuitive, comfortable feel for those used to a vintage Gibson instrument. Gibson's traditional 1 11/16" nut width is ideal for chording and fingerstyle playing, and this SG is simply a joy to play. The face of the headstock is polished to a mirror finish, with inlayed pearloid crown and Gibson logo, also sporting a set of Gibson Deluxe tuners with flawless chrome plating and aged tulip buttons. Like the original SGs of the '60s and all of the classic variations since, the Gibson USA SG Standard has a body crafted from solid mahogany in the asymmetrical “double-horned” deep double-cutaway design. A light and supremely resonant wood, mahogany gives this guitar outstanding tonal richness and depth, widtho plenty of clarity and sustain. Coupled with the SG's characteristic beveled edge—a big part of this model's distinctive styling—the mahogany's light weight also enhances playing comfort. To load it with certified classic tone, Gibson USA equipped the SG Special with a pair of its most popular humbucking pickups. The 490R in the neck position is made with an Alnico II magnet and wound to vintage specs for plenty of warm vocal tones with impressive clarity. The 490T in the bridge position has the same magnet construction, and a few more turns of coil wire for a slightly hotter performance overall, giving you everything from meaty crunch to searing lead tones. Your tone is anchored down by the classic pairing of a Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece. Cosmetically, the guitar is very clean, with only a light scratch or two in the clear coat on the back of the instrument and one light nick on the edge of the face where the forearm rests. There is also light wear on the pickguard in the pick path, but that's about the extent of it! The deep gloss nitro walnut finish is a rich and uncommon color, accented by the black plastic and chrome hardware. The SG Special evolved out of the Les Paul Standard in the early '60s when Gibson introduced the SG as its primary solidbody shape. The Special was conceived as a more affordable, parred-down take on SG Standard, and this designation persists till today.
