Lighter in color than typical amber-colored Cedar, and in this case with an elegant flamed pattern. Cedar is a relatively soft wood, and imparts a warmer tone with a touch of compression, but also manages to be expressive and detailed. Combined with brighter-toned Okoume and an airy semi-hollow construction, the Port Orford Bluesboy has wonderful chime, depth, and sweet articulation. This is the first Bluesboy we've encountered with a 5-way switch or the Duncan Jazz Humbucker, which is a cleanly-voiced Alnico 5 pickup. Compared to the Alnico 2 Seth Lover or G&L A2S4248 neck pickup, the Jazz Humbucker has stronger wound string attack and cleaner treble response. It's clean and punchy but not in a raucous way, and the cedar/semi construction evens out the attack for a sound that is responsive but not totally in your face. The five way pickup switch is uniquely wired and adds a lot of flexibility. It works like this:Neck humbuckerNeck splitOne humbucker coil is series with bridge, other coil in parallel with bridgeSplit humbucker in parallel with bridgeBridgePositions1 and 5 yield the most "classic" tones, although the construction and woods of this guitar lend their own vibe. The unusual clarity of the neck position makes it possibly the most "lead friendly" setting, with plenty of attack and low end without the mushiness that often occurs with a neck humbucker. The bridge pickup has the characteristic country twang of the ASAT MFD, but the semi-hollow construction takes out a little of the bottom end, and this pickup comes into its own with a little high end roll-off.Positions 2 through 4 yield a variety of rhythm-ready and picking tones that are sweet, clear, with exceptional note definition. You can conjure elements of Country, 80's REM, Dead, Byrds, Tom Petty or Wallflowers. Under hard strumming the Cedar top adds gentle natural compression for tones that are lush, musical and captivating. These settings make the most of the woods and construction of this guitar, and you can cover anything from Roots Rock to parts that would have your reaching for an acoustic. The Port Orford Bluesboy is an elegant reminder how much woods and construction can influence the sound of a guitar, and that it's not just about the pickups. While maybe not the first choice for your Oz tribute project, it covers the Jazz, Roots and Country spectrum with style and hypnotic clarity.
