String Comnpany, Akron, OH In 1969, Virgil Lay opened Lay's Guitar Repair on Kenmore Boulevard. As his reputation for repairs grew, he would receive guitars in the mail from around the world, Speedy, his grandson, said: Among those who trusted Lay with their guitars were Joe Walsh of the James Gang and the Eagles, and Jack Bruce, the British bass player from Cream. But Lay, who became frustrated when newly strung guitars quickly went out of tune, began to think about solutions. In 1979, Speedy said, his grandfather began applying adhesives to the twists in the strings to stop them from stretching. The next year, Lay and two others formed S.I.T. Strings, Speedy said. The S.I.T. stood for ''stay in tune.'' At first, the strings were made in the basement at Lay's Guitar Repair, then a block away on Kenmore Boulevard. In 1993, he opened the operation in the 800 block of South Broadway. S.I.T. Strings, Speedy said, is now a ''boutique string company'' with 32 employees making not only its own strings but also strings for other companies. Speedy said he took over ownership in 1997 but his grandfather remained involved with the company. Virgil Lay, Speedy said, was a hard worker who was at the string operation seven days a week. The guitar shop was sold to Dan Shinn in 1988. Shinn, 47, who built guitars with his father, worked for Virgil Lay in his shop. ''He was one of those guys, if you presented a problem to him, he would come up with a way to fix it,'' said Shinn, who now calls the store Lay's Guitar Shop. Dan Shinn, the current owner, started working for Virgil Lay in 1979. He acquired the guitar repair shop from Virgil in the late '80's and to this day upholds the reputation for high quality repairs and restorations that has been the hallmark of Lay's Guitar Shop. Under Dan's management Lay's Guitar Shop has not only upheld the high standards set by Virgil Lay, but has expanded the business to accommodate an international market. THE HISTORY OF THIS S.I.T. GUITAR. In the early 1980's Dan Shinn built 65 guitars and 15 basses in his shop (Lay's) to promote the beginning of S.I.T. Strings Company and its emergence as a leader in the "boutique guitar string" manufacturing marketplace. THESE GUITARS WERE AIRBRUSHED WITH DIFFERENT DESIGNS SO NO TWO ARE THE SAME. Each is a PIECE OF ART. ABOUT THIS GUITAR. Dan customized a Warmouth ALDER guitar body and added a MAPLE neck, jumbo frets, Kahler locking tremolo system, and 3 BARTOLINI pickups (2 Single Coils and 1 Humbucker). It was finished in a beautiful CANDY APPLE RED color the ART was AIRBRUSHED on and then covered with a clearcoat. That clearcoat has now checked all over the guitar as expected. The condition of the guitars is rated FAIR. It has the usual dings, dents, blems, etc. but is operationally great. And look at the great finish checking. That makes it a real relic. For its sound, I would describe it more as a "screamer". It is loud. Comes in gig bag. For buyers outside the continental USA, please ask for shipping quote before buying this item. Thank you. It has the usual dings, dents, scratches, marks, wear et al that you normally find on an used guitar. 2. The guitar is in fully operational condition. 3. Buyer has 48 hrs. to inspect the guitar or have it inspected. Any defects, damage, misrepresentations or other problems must be reported within that time period in writing to the Seller. 4. In the case of damage during shipment, Buyer shall immediately inform seller of such damage and will maintain all original packing materials and box for inspection by the transportation company. 5. If other problems are discovered, Seller will either arrange for repair etc. at a location near the Buyer or request that the Buyer return the guitar to the Seller (Seller will reimburse Buyer for cost of shipment of guitar back to Seller). 6. Seller will correct indicated problems and ship the guitar back to the Buyer within 7 days of receiving it. 7. In the event that the guitar cannot be repaired or replaced with a similar item from Seller’s inventory, the Seller will give the Buyer Credit toward current or future purchases from inventory of Seller. 8. No refunds or returns for Buyer Remorse or Buyer Mind Changing. 9. If there are any undisclosed physical attributes of this guitar that will prevent buyer from playing it successfully, e.g., neck to wide to be played with arthritic hands, guitar too heavy to be played due to back, shoulder, etc. problems , then we will, upon return of the guitar, issue a Credit Memo to Buyer in the amount paid for the guitar plus the cost of shipment paid by the Buyer against the future purchase of a guitar from us
