Here is a unique ASAT Special that features no pickguard to show off the captivating Greenburst finish and Swamp Ash grain. G&L's signature Soapbar style Magnetic Field Design pickups deliver full frequency response and a bouncy, touch sensitive attack that is reminiscent of a vintage pickup but with much greater output and even response. This guitar evokes the sounds of the Strat®, Tele®, and even Jazzmaster®.

This particular ASAT is made from a nicely figured piece of Swamp Ash with double contours for a guitar that's light in the hand and heavy on the tone.So what is an MFD pickup? It stands for magnetic field design, and it's Leo Fender's solution to getting more power from a pickup without losing fidelity and frequency response. As many players know, getting output by just adding more windings can have some nasty side effects: Loss of high end, honky midrange and that "hot" congested tone that is far from musical. The MFD design uses a low resistance coil paired with a fairly strong ceramic magnet positioned below the bobbin. The lower resistance/inductance maintains fidelity while the ceramic magnet helps with output. I'm sure there is more to it than that, but that's the basic concept.Regardless, the MFD pickup is a marvel in both tone and balance, and represents a real step forward in single coil pickups. They have a broad frequency response, a very balanced attack, and a bouncy feel with a slightly scooped midrange that is the best of both Strat® and Tele®. The neck pickup has a glassy quality that is clean and articulate with a nice slightly hollow Strat tone on the upper frets. Roll of the volume a touch and it gets a little rounder and more Tele like. The bridge pickup has plenty of jangle and twang without being too sharp, and when paired with the neck pickup is perfect for a little Vince Gill or Brent Mason picking. Both pickups have plenty of output, and through a good stomp box or gain channel there is punch plus harmonic complexity that is the best of both single/double-coil worlds. As mentioned this guitar has the "Original Leo Spec" body thickness, which is 1.62" instead of the standard 1.78" thickness. This no-charge option helps shave a little weight off the guitar, and adds an extra measure of comfort. There appears to be no sonic downside, and with many players looking for lighter weight guitars, the OLS option is a no-brainer. Lightweight tone woods are getting harder find these days, and the OLS body and full body contours helps to keep the weight in the mid-7's.The G&L #1 neck had been a favorite for many years, and with the medium jumbo frets is comfortable for both chords and bends. It's a little beefier than a vintage style neck, but still easy to get around and still remains one of our favorites. Combined with the MFD pickups this guitar is great for blues, roots, or country, but also has the output and presence to grind out some awesome rock tones. Once you've gotten used to the hypnotic clarity, power and versatility of G&L's MFD pickups, conventional pickups sound a little thin and uninspiring. The G&L ASAT Special looks familiar, but it stretches beyond the humble roots of its classic predecessors to render both traditional and modern sounds, with Custom Shop quality at an off-the-rack price.
