Appraisal3/29/2017 Appraisal ID 7612-265The following appraisal is made regarding replacement value.Value: $3,200.00This instrument is a typical example of a Martin 00-17 guitar from the early 1950's, showing some playwear and minor repair issues but appearing to remain in overall very good condition. The model 00-17 was a lower-priced Martin, built in fairly large numbers from the early 1930's through the 1950's. It is a grand concert size flat top guitar with no decorative trim and all-mahogany construction including the X-braced top. Martin guitars above this level were fitted with a spruce top. The 00-17 was the larger and more expensive of two available all- mahogany models, retailing originally for $70 in 1951. 600 were sold that year, a fairly consistent number for much of the period. Equipment includes individual Kluson large-plate openback tuners with plastic buttons, small straight rosewood bridge and tortoise celluloid pickguard, typical Martin features for the beginning of 1950's. While this style of mahogany-top small-body-guitar was among the least expensive Martin guitars when new, they have a distinctive sound and many guitarists with a fingerpicking style find them particularly suitable, even preferring them to any other instrument. This 00-17 appears in solidly original condition, with what appear to be the original bridge, pickguard and Kluson tuning pegs. The plastic tuner buttons are an unusual pattern and these may have been replaced, as the originals sometimes deteriorate. The clear lacquer finish shows general wear overall, with moderate checking, dings, chips and scrapes but no large areas of loss. There are two grain crack on the lower back, which appears to be sealed up are still visible, and the back center seam looks to be open, likely having been repaired at some point but the repair having re-opened. There is some finish loss to the lower side and what appear to be small grain cracks to the mahogany there. The instrument appears to be in good playable condition in its current state. This condition analysis is based on photographs, so there may be internal issues not readily visible but overall the instrument appearsIn making this evaluation, we do not agree to purchase or replace the article(s) listed.
