This banjo is listed due to me downsizing my instrument collection. It is being sold at much less that the cost of its component parts.
This 5 string flathead bluegrass style banjo is converted from a 1930's Gibson MB-00 mandolin banjo with an 11 inch head a prewar rim and one piece flange.
The instrument has the prewar one piece flange, prewar flat style hooks and nuts, prewar armrest and E2 grooved stretcher band, prewar 1/2 to 5/8" 3 ply maple rim and a prewar maple resonator.
These MB00 mandolin banjos like other Gibson 00 style instruments of the prewar period did not have serial numbers or rim lables.
The old damaged "Gibson" mandolin neck is included in the sale of the banjo to validate the source. I do posess the other old mandolin banjo parts and can confirm without any doubt that this is a prewar conversion.
The 5/8 inch prewar maple rim was sent to USA to be machined and for the flathaed tone ring to be fitted.. It was fitted with a Sullivan archtop to flathead conversion tone ring being the best possible option for these slightly slimmer 5/8" rims used on MB00 banjos of that period. This excellent tone ring is the same one used to convert Gibson prewar Archtop banjos to a flathead without modification.
It has a 5 string Gibson style maple and rosewood neck with mastertone markings and spikes at frets 7 and 9.
The neck is fitted to the rim using dual coordinator rods one of which is the original tarnished item and one a modern equivalent. This neck is not an accurate copy of an orginal mastertone neck but is a 5 string neck similar to one of the styles used by Gibson around 1932. Some of the original flat style hooks are tarnished. The banjo is fitted with a modern fully adjustable  "Fults 1934" presto style tailpiece' This style of high end and expensive tailpiece fastens to the existing hooks and nuts rather than the coordinator rod bracket. It is a "Fults1934" style made to better the original presto tailpieces by making it fully adjustable in all directions
The banjo has modern planetary style tuning heads and a Snuffy Smith bridge fitted over a remo top frosted head.
The banjo is contained in a non descript rectangular unfitted banjo/guitar instrument case which is only suitable for transport to its destination and house storage.A fitted case would be better. There is slight uplifting of the one piece flange normally found on prewar instruments. The maple resonator has the Gibson "00" three point thumb screw fixingThis may be your opportunity to own a genuine prewar Gibson conversion banjo. This conversion banjo is a used item as can be seen in the pictures. The difference between this bluegrass conversion and an expensive prewar Gibson TB11 conversion is three fold. Firstly the TB11 would have a notched tension hoop and round hooks. Secondly the rim on a TB11 would be 5/8" to 3/4". Thirdly the TB11 banjo would cost perhaps triple the price of this one.
My expert in USA tells me that these MB00 banjos make excellent alternatives to the TB11 conversions.
Here is a TB00 for sale at Elderley USA for $1250! which has NOT YET been converted requiring a new neck tone ring machining etc etc. see Please ask questions
