Up for sale, a 1965 Fender Mustang in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Aside from a new headstock decal, this guitar is 100% original and complete with the original hardshell case! This lightly played and well cared for vintage guitar has a prominent acoustic voice that translates well through the stock pickups with great jangle and clarity. Since the pickups are essentially flat pole Stratocaster pickups with covers over the magnets, the tones are surprisingly similar, although the Mustang has the added benefit of a pair of phase switches for a very cool hollow twang when both pickups are engaged and out of phase! Weighing in at 7lbs 10oz, the poplar body balances well on a strap too. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with a fresh set of 11-50 nickel strings and comfortable, low action, this Mustang is an absolutely killer vintage Fender. The neck has a medium C profile that has a surprising amount of roundness and heft down at the nut with generous shoulders. The profile grows to full "baseball bat" depth and chunk as you move into the higher registers of the fretboard and has a very substantial feel. The gloss nitro lacquer finish is completely intact on the neck profile, and there's a bit of light flame figuring in the maple too. The guitar has the full 24" Mustang scale, 1 5/8" nut width and vintage 7 1/4" fretboard radius. The stock fretwire is intact and has been recently leveled and crowned, showing only faint wear on frets 1-2 and virtually no wear up the fretboard. On the headstock, the Kluson Deluxe double line tuning machines still work smoothly and hold pitch well with clean white buttons. The electronics all work as intended and sound great. The early "F" neck plate serial number and Stackpole pot codes date to '65, while both early gray bobbin pickups sport 1965 handwritten date codes as well. The heel of the neck is dated June, 1965, and the neck pocket has the correct paint stick markings and a very snug and secure fit for the neck. The original bridge is present, as well as the early Pat. Pending chrome vibrato unit, complete with the original arm. This vibrato has excellent spring tension and actuates with a light touch, jumping back to the original pitch with ease.Cosmetically, the body shows only a moderate amount of honest playwear, mostly around the edges of the body and on the back with a few assorted small chips and dings in the finish, and finish scratches central to the back and behind the bridge on the face of the instrument. The white pearloid pickguard is remarkably clean and vibrant and the chrome hardware is stunningly clean. The neck profile is also notably free from any wear. All of the original shielding plates are intact and the routes are original and untouched. The original hardshell case is in fantastic shape, with three clean and original working chrome latches, as well as the stock handle. The gray speckled exterior shows only very faint wear on the black leather ends and the small neck retainer strap is present inside.
