This is a vintage (serial number GL 740008) Conn 8DRS Double French Horn. The 8D is Conn's large bore professional symphony double horn, and is usually built from solid nickel silver in a Kruspe wrap style. This horn is the 8DRS variant, and has a bell, 1st branch, and leadpipe all of which are made from rose brass for a warmer, fuller tone. This horn also features a screw-bell configuration, so the bell is detachable for easy storage. The valves move well with very good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few very small dings and pings and some scratching on the finish of the F side third slide. The minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wished for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a Conn hardshell screw bell case in good condition, and a mouthpiece in good condition.How the horn plays: Big, full and warm sound. The tone is dark, mellow and smooth. The horn is responsive and free-blowing. The low and high registers speak well and feel secure. The horn has an excellent dynamic range, capable of a strong, edgy fortissimo and a very soft, mellow and milky pianissimo without breaking up. The Bb side timbre is slightly brighter than the F side.
