Vintage Fender Champ - 1955 - Garage Find - Working condition.Great old Fender Champ with 5D1 EC code on tube sticker - dated to March 1955. Speaker code is 6L-1A, 3955011. Serial number is 8227. Transformer has a code "778 - last number after 8 is unreadable). Made by "Julia" as evidenced by the name on tape attached to underneath the chassis. An amp with serial number 8224 recently sold for over $1600. Here is what I did to this amp prior to listing:1) Blew out many years of dust2) Carefully glued down a few areas of Tolex to prevent further damage. Used tacky glue and only glued areas that needed it.3) Removed amp and speaker from cabinet4) Tested tubes, replaced 6v6GT with military grade vintage tube that tested better than NOS. Rectifier tube tested OK but you may want to replace with one that tests better.5) Inspected and tested speaker - speaker works and measures fine but does have some holes/wrinkles here and there on the paper cone. Dust cap is degrading.6) Brought up amp slowly to 60 volts on variac. Amp warmed up nicely without issues. Tested amp with microphone input. Sounded good! That's as far as I will go. You will need, at a minimum, to bring the amp up to 120 volts slowly to prevent potential damage to the circuit/transformer. These old amps will need some attention by a qualified tech for safe long term use. I am leaving it up to the next owner to decide direction and extent of restoration.7) Added two flat head screws to secure amp to cabinet.That's it! I took a ton of pictures most of which are included in this listing. This is a rare and wonderful piece of history with a very cool patina. This amp shows many years of wear and use. While it is working, it will need further updating by a qualified tech to make it good for every day use.
