This is a good and authentic vintage French 4/4 violin. An 88 year old lady has given me the violin to sell on behalf. It belonged to her father and has been in her family for nearly 100 years. It needs a new set up. I am able to arrange this for an interested buyer if required, or you may wish to do this yourself. It is clearly school of Collin Mezin père and the model is similar to the better Mezin's made prior to 1900. It is an excellent option if you are seeking a Mezin style violin from a good period in French violin making.New strings are required, and it is recommended that you make subtle adjustments and a new set up. These violins were made for Beare & Sons, London, and it is a rare early example. Note the usual cosmetic scuffs an dings which can be tidied up easily.The violin has a well repaired sound post crack measuring approximately 4.4 cm;this has been done properly and is 100% secure. Note also wing cracks - one on the treble side measuring 4.1 cm, and another on the bass side measuring 2.3 cm. Principal measurements are: Length of back = 35.9 cm; lower bout = 21 cm; Middle bout = 11 cm; Upper bout = 17 cm. This violin features finely executed purfling, is an attractive Strad model, and has a gorgeous two piece flaming maple back.
