| Brand: | Gibson | Exact Year: | 1953 |
| Model: | J-45 |
This 1953 Gibson J-50 has no cracks and very few dings in the original finish for its age. The neck angle is perfect with medium action and room to raise or lower the saddle as desired. I'm pretty sure the tuning gears (while the original style) are modern replacements. There have been some braces that have been reglued, and the lowest one on the back is actually missing, as are the last few strips across the back center seam. All the remaining braces are tight, and I've never seen the need to replace the missing one, though it would certainly be possible to do so. It has the characteristic sound of 1950s Gibsons, dry and responsive. It's old enough to still have the small pickguard, which got significantly bigger sometime in the mid-1950s, as well as the full 1 11/16" neck width, which got weirdly narrow in the 1960s. The good quality hardshell case dates from somewhat later, perhaps the late 1960s or early 70s? If you're anywhere near the San Francisco bay area and wish to try it out before bidding, let me know and we'll work something out. Feel free to ask any questions, and thanks for looking! |
