J. Geils Personal Gibson Guitar Model ES 300N 1941 Blonde Bombshell

Original Gibson ES 300, serial number #97011 from 1941. I purchased this guitar in 2007 from Lark Street Music (Teaneck, New Jersey ). John Geils, also known as  "J. Geils " was a client and customer of this shop, (letter enclosed from Bernard "Buzz" Levine, store owner, which will accompany the guitar to the successful buyer of this auction). This is a very cool and well played early Gibson electric guitar. Needless to say, John “J" Geils is considered one of the most important rock musicians and the J. Geils Band contributed greatly to the heritage of American Rock and Roll, with numerous hit records and successful tours that reflect their influence on the rock scene of the 1980's.
To understand how important John "J" Geils was and the J. Geils band, you can go to:
As far as the guitar offered here for sale:
From Gruhn’s book on Vintage guitars;
ES-300 17” wide, large slant-mounted oblong pick up with adjustable poles, jack on side, trapeze tailpiece with pointed ends and raised arrows, triple-bound top and black, bound pick-guard, maple neck, double-parallelogram inlay, single-bound peg-head, crown peg-head inlay (first Gibson model with crown), pearl logo, natural finish, Kluson tuners. Introduced in 1940 and production ceased by WW11 in 1941.  When the guitar was re-introduced, a P-90 pickup was added to the neck position.Sometime after 1941, someone added a P-90 pickup to the neck position of this guitar and additionally a 3-way switch in the upper right area. A cut out to the original pick-guard to accommodate the additional P-90 neck pickup.The guitar includes a period hardshell case with a brass plate inscribed “Metronome, Honolulu, T.H.” Everything else on the guitar appears original, although some of the Kluson tuners may have been changed. The guitar appears to be well played and has that "broken in feeling" as you can see from the outside neck, but does not take away anything from the beauty of the natural wood finish, the details all appear intact. It plays great and has that "mojo" you experience from a guitar that his been well played and well taken care of for many years. From what I’ve read, John “J” Geils was really more influenced and interested in Jazz music than Rock & Roll. This Guitar, his ES 300 would have been a great bridge between these two styles of music. Ultimately, most guitarists in large rock bands all wind up playing solid body guitars for live performances due to acoustics, volume and feedback. If you look into John “J” Geils later in life, you can see how he settles back into a more jazz oriented musical experience. On his 2003 jazz debut album, called “Jay Geils Plays Jazz”, the liner notes says, "dedicated to the memory of my father, who took me to see Louis Armstrong and the All Stars when I was 12 years old, I am eternally grateful."  On that back cover (featured here in the photo layout), he is playing a Gibson Charlie Christian style guitar which is really very similar to the ES 300 I am offering here but with  a slightly different pick-up configuration and cosmetic details..This guitar for sale was also prominently featured  2 years ago at the SFO Airport Museum in a major exhibition on Art Deco Style.  As you can see in the display case photo with its reference to early electric guitars and Charlie Christian, combining all of this makes this John "J" Geils personal guitar very important and interesting.
