Roland TR-808This TR-808 is in good shape. Everything works as it should and it sounds great. It's the rarer 117 volt version. Below is a detailed description that you should probably read so you can justify this spendy item to yourself and/or your significant other. If this doesn't worry you then jump to the TL;DR at the bottom. Cosmetic description:- The most extreme cosmetic defect on this 808 is the result of some genius burning the bottom corners of the 13th and 14th step buttons with a cigarette at some point in its life. This happened before I came to own this 808 about ten years ago. With that in mind it's worth pointing out that this 808 has been in a smoke-free room for a decade and doesn't smell like cigarettes. Really this is a minor defect (buttons work fine) but you'll definitely notice it in the photos so its worth mentioning. - The Run/Stop and Tap buttons were replaced by a previous owner. I believe the replacements came from a parted out CSQ-600. So yeah they might look a bit weird but they work perfectly. The Tap button will sometimes turn a bit if you hammer it, but just turn it back to its normal position and get on with your day. Or leave it turned a bit and show your OCD who's boss. Either way it works fine.- The left plastic end cap can't be completely screwed into the bottom metal plate, because the internal screw posts were broken at some point in its life. This doesn't mean the end cap isn't secured, it will just move a bit if you pick up the 808 or squeeze the left side of the unit. Again, just don't do that and it's not an issue. Why would you do that anyway if you're not moving it?- The battery compartment is clean. No signs of corrosion.- Check the photos! I did my best to illustrate all of the dings and scratches mentioned above. As far as 808's go, I've seen and used much worse.Operational description:Everything works fine and this thing behaves like a typical 808. No noisy pots. Some of the step switches need a second press every now and then if you're too quick/light when you press it, but if you've used an 808 before (after the year 1995 or so) you'll know this is pretty typical. The switches for selecting between toms and congas sometimes need an extra flick to settle. Character!I love the snare on this 808. The first 808 I had in the 90's had a really crap snare compared to this one. I don't know how to describe it but yeah. It's got chunk. The clap on this 808 has a longer decay. I'm pretty sure that someone just adjusted the internal trim at some point but I really dig it. You can easily set it back to a more staccato clap if you really want. It's not super long, but it isn't as short as say the 707 clap. If you flick between MA and CP you'll sometimes get a shorter clap for the first hit and then it will go back to the longer decay. Analog high-five!So there you have it. Full disclosure. No surprises. This 808 isn't a museum quality, trophy example of an 808 you would mount on your wall and never use...it's a 35 year old used musical instrument that sounds great and works fine.TL;DR: Everything works. No noisy pots, minor cosmetic blemishes. Run/Stop and Tap buttons were replaced at some point. Some dumbhead that wasn't me burnt the bottom corner of a couple of the step buttons. **Contact me directly for an accurate shipping quote. Shipping price listed here is just an estimate.**
