This is a really nice, very well made, little 6-string banjo from the folks at Gold Tone. The model is CC BT which I can no longer find in their catalog. Not sure of the age but it was made in Korea not China so it's not current production. One of the most notable things about it is that it does not have a metal tone ring. The head fits directly over the rim of the pot which appears to be solid maple like the old pre-War Maybelle banjos. This gives it a really nice woody sound with less "ping" than you would get from a metal ring. The neck is fairly wide (1 5/8" at the nut) with a slight radius and nicely rounded edges so it feels very comfortable and there's lots of room for fingerpicking. There is no obvious fret wear, the tuners and truss rod function as they should and the action and intonation are excellent. The finish is a smooth soft mat not high gloss and the neck just glides in your hand. Couldn't find any finish flaws in the neck or resonator but there is a small ding in the fretboard near the 5th fret (pic #12). It is noticeable but you can't feel it under your fingers when you play it. The banjo is equipped with a K&K Banjo Twin pickup system that was professionally installed if not original equipment. The jack is mounted through the pot. This gives the instrument a very broad tonal palette. It's high impedance output does not require a pre-amp but a pre and compressor really make these systems shine. The msrp on the pickup system is $148 not counting installation. Not having the brass tone ring also means that this banjo is comfortably light in weight. It's well balanced and very comfortable to play standing. A heavily padded nylon Gold Tone case is included. It's currently set up with a fresh set of GHS PF120 light gauge strings (11-42) and ready to play. If you've ever thought about adding one of these to your arsenal this is an excellent choice.
