SALOMON, Jean-Baptiste Deshayes Born 1713 Rheims, d. after 1767 Paris France. Established in Paris on the rue de Grenelle Saint Honoré at the sign ‘Sainte-Cécile’. Thereafter adopted the name ‘Jean-Baptiste Deshayes’, and worked in the old Ouvrard shop in place de l’École. Appointed Master of the violin makers guild 1760. Highly successful businessman and dealer in all sorts of musical instruments.  The work of Jean Baptiste-Deshayes Salomon is definitely Italianate and appears to have been influenced by the peculiarities of the mid-18th-century Roman school. His work bears an uncanny similarity to the work of the great Florentine master, Giovanni Battista Gabrielli, himself a notable exponent of the Stainer model. Despite the fact that his work resembles that of Gabrielli, there remain a few telling aspects of his craft which provide means of identification. The most important of these is Salomon’s varnish. This is normally spirit-based, rather thinly laid on and generally of a bright yellow-brown color.
In general, as the photograph illustrates, this violin is gracefully proportioned and definitely leans towards a feminine concept. All details of craft support this model, with the elegance of the scroll and sound holes, the neatly inlaid purfling and the clean interior work devoid of any hints of roughness. Completely set up and ready to be played, nothing needed the violin has some few minor repairs on the upper tables and a neck and scroll graph and the peg holes were bushed all is very stable and will not affect the tone quality. there is a fire stamp on the talons stating "Salomon a Paris". The tone is clear and bright, with good resonance and projection.
