This is a classic all-original American mandolin made during the golden years of Lloyd Loar’s tenure over Gibson’s mandolin production (1919-1924). This 98-year-old mandolin is in remarkably fine condition. It has had only two owners, and the current owner / seller has played it regularly over the past 44 years. It has minimal playing-wear on the back of the neck and a small area on the body where the right wrist rests. It is otherwise in remarkable condition, with very minimal cosmetic blemishes. The finish and hardware are all original and in beautiful condition, and the frets are good for many more years of play (it was last refretted by Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, California). It has superb tone that is balanced between the upper and lower registers. The fingerboard is straight and true and it plays easily up to the upper reaches of the fingerboard. In short, this is an exceedingly fine sounding instrument that plays beautifully, looks sharp and is worthy of a professional musician. The only notable flaws are (1) a small visible patch where the pickguard has deteriorated on the surface and support of the pickguard (see pics), but has not affected the finish in any way (vintage A4 pickguards can be easily sourced; (2) the ebony strap-pin is missing a small chip at the top, but still works. There is no known history of repair of any sort. The case is also original with a replaced with a serviceable black leather luggage handle. Given the age of this instrument, it is being sold as is with no option to return. Please inspect the pictures carefully, as they are considered part of the item description, and flaws consistent with an instrument of this age may have been missed in this description.
