Up for sale, a 1961 Fender Bassman in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This is the first iteration of the "Piggyback" version of this amplifier, decked out in rough blonde tolex and oxblood grillcloth. What makes this early Brownface Bassman stand out from the pack is the Tone Ring 1x12 speaker cabinet, which was an elegant and ingenious idea, but one that Fender dropped very early in this model's production run! This Brownface circuit drives two 6L6 power tubes for roughly 40 powerful watts of pure tube goodness. Like the Tweed amps that preceded it, the Brownface circuits are very dynamic and respond well to picking dynamics with Fender's hi-fi, glassy clean tones. The EQ controls have a huge range and after around 5 on the volume dial, the amp cascades into very rich tube overdrive that compresses noticeably and sounds great. It's the kind of natural tube saturation that only comes from pushing a well designed Fender circuit to its limit. The precursor to the famed and more common 6G6-B circuit, the 6G6 iteration seen here is notable for being the first "piggyback" Bassman offered by Fender, and featuring a tube rectifier, for the sweet sag that smooths out the overdrive and adds a real roundness to note attack.A Pre-CBS Fender Blonde Bassman was used on more Beatles recording sessions than the Vox AC30, was a particular favorite of Pete Townshend, and has become the amp forever linked with Brian Setzer's classic Rockabilly tones. It's hard to beat the Bassman for a tone that bridges the gap between the warmth and nuance of the Brownface circuits and the shimmery cleans of the Blackface line!As previously noted, one very unique and desirable feature of this Bassman is the ported Tone Ring speaker cabinet. This 1x12 enclosure was designed by Fender to deliver the clearest, most pure tone with an era correct Oxford 12M6 speaker (dated to '63), and as such utilizes a dual baffle board design in which the speaker floats between the baffles, mounted to a metal "tone ring." This design makes the cabinet work as a closed back, ported enclosure, and you'll notice greater range of your EQ controls, ample bass response, and an overall sweeter, balanced tone that you simply can't get with any other Fender cabinet. The Oxford has a clean frame and speaker was just professionally reconed to vintage spec to guarantee longevity and clarity in the low end (it's a lot to ask of a single 12" speaker to push the power of a Bassman, but this Oxford really does the trick). The circuit is very original and has been well maintained and recently serviced with fresh filter caps and a modern three-prong power cable. All of the famed blue Ajax and yellow Astron tone caps are intact in the preamp, with stock Stackpole pots, carbon comp resistors, and cloth wire. All of the Schumacher transformers are original with early 1961 date codes. The output transformer dates to the 20th week of '61, while the power transformer dates to the 5th week of that year. The tube chart is completely intact and quite clean, with some light staining on the bottom portion, and a handwritten "A" suffix on the 6G6 model. Since the 6G6 circuit was the only one to have a tube rectifier, we're advertising this amp as a 6G6 (not a 6G6-A), which is more accurate to the actual circuit in this head, and in line with Fender's constantly changing circuits and often mislabeled tube charts. The tube compliment on the amp includes a brand new pair of JJ 6L6 power tubes that have been properly biased with years of life left.Cosmetically, this is an excellent and well kept example of one of Fender's rarest Pre-CBS designs. The head has been professionally retolexed, while the cab retains its original rough blonde covering. Both the head and cabinet have new oxblood grillc
