Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself!This banjo was recently tested out by Jay Ungar, but the banjo did not give him the sound he was looking for to complement the extensive collection of instruments he already has. Jay tested steel and nylon strings on it, and thought it sounded best with the nylon strings, so new nylon strings are now installed on it (not captured in the posted pics) by a person that knows what they are doing. Great Antique George Clifton Dobson 5 string banjo for your here. The tuner pegs appear to match and look appropriate to the banjo. Remco head is intact on the piece. It has a Grover bridge. Nice brass piece at the bottom of the neck that looks appropriate to the piece. Proper tailpiece with the star for this Dobson as well. Nice nickel plated finish still on the rim and other metal pieces. From what I have read online, Dobson is credited with being the first maker to add frets to a banjo.
There are patent dates of November 1881 on the tailpiece, March 1884 on the Dowel Stick/Rod, and March 1884 on the tension band. Not sure of the actual year of production of this banjo, you be the judge before acquiring. There also appears to be the number "1268" on the dowel rod. Not sure if this is what you call a Silver bell model. Some Ebayers have said the Silver Bell was made only by Henry Dobson, not George Dobson, so just noting here for you to consider as well when considering buying this item.
The nickel plated j bolts, hex nuts, and shoes are all in place. Neck is firmly attached to the body. Peg head looks good. No cracks, splits or repairs. Same withe the 5 tuner peg holes. Beautiful finish still on the neck, dowel stick, and peg head. Frets are all in place. Some loss of finish to the neck most noticeable on the upper part. No ridging to the fingerboard that would impact playing. The action on the neck could use a little adjustment.
The banjo is 35.5" tall, by 11.5" across, by 2.75" wide at head (4" tall at top of neck when laid down). The distance between the nut and 12th fret and then from that fret to the bridge is 12-5/*8". The semi-hard case shows some wear. The plastic handle on the case is broken.
This musical instrument is not represented to be in playing condition. There most likely will need to be refurbishing done to make this instrument playable again. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.

It is interesting that the H.C. neck is so similar to the neck on your banjo. My H.C. has the same tailpiece and similar tuners, only black. But the difference is in the pot. I have an H.C. and a George sitting side by side and play them every day. Interesting piece. This looks like a G.C. Dobson 'Matchless'. The silver bell is a henry dobson model. The Matchless was a much simpler instrument and lacks a tone ring.
