Here is a (serial number 538892) Holton H-105 "Tuckwell" Double French Horn. This instrument was originally a Holton 179 "Farkas" model, and it has been extensively modified to transform it into a Holton 105. The upgrades include replacing the bell and first branch with a screw bell and first branch made from bronze, upgrading the leadpipe and adding coins to the finger buttons for increased grip. The coins added are solid silver "Mercury Head" dimes from 1935, 1936 and 1937. This horn has also been fitted with an adjustable hand rest flipper, also called a "duckfoot". In addition, the valve caps were upgraded to Holton "Merker-Matic" caps, which improve the blow of the instrument by adding weight in the valve cluster. All this has made this a very nice horn indeed.
This horn is in very good condition, and plays very well. The valves move well with good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few very small dings and some very light scratching throughout the horn. The engraving on the leadpipe reads “Holton H105 Made in U.S.A.”. The minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. Everything has been thoroughly lubed, and there are new strings and bumpers all around. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a ProTec ProPac screwbell backpack style case, and a mouthpiece in good condition. How the horn plays: Big, round and very dark sound. The tone is smooth and warm. The Bb side is a bit brighter than the F side. The horn is responsive and free--blowing. The horn has a good dynamic range, capable of a smooth, full pianissimo and a weighty fortissimo. It is difficult to over-blow or blatt the horn, as it is very dark and mellow. The low and high registers speak very well.
All horns are located at Silver & Brass Music Shop710 N. Curry St. Carson City, NV89703(775) 301-6289
