REVISION: I am posting new photos, as I have buttoned up the design somewhat. I had some feedback at the studio as it was, and so I have made it a bit more stage worthy for the working professional sax player. Previously the harness was untaped. It is now taped back and looks great. So:
I have been experimenting with this one of a kind horn I have made for a few days now, and it is truly impressive. The actual horn is of Chinese origin, and surprisingly it is an outstanding horn. I have owned great horns, like Selmer and Yamaha and Kielwerth in the past, and this horn was great out of the box. I researched the chinese market and there are good horns from there but they are hard to find. The horn is unnumbered and undecorated. Upon shipment I will inscribe the number "1" on it, and possibly a scroll saying R. Kane, but probably not.I know it is not pretty. It is a prototype. That being said, it sounds truly beautiful. The gain knob and five band EQ and built in tuner all work well. You can get a vast array of tones from this sax simply with the built in preamp. Using it with guitar pedals and other effects is where it's brilliance truly shines. It is such a joy to play.I am working on a website and making a proper video. For now, you can google "electric kool aid saxophone test" and the video of me playing it comes up. It is strictly for demonstration purposes only. You can hear the acoustic sound and the delayed sound is the amplified sound. This is from proccessor lag from the interface I was using at home. I have tested the horn out however in a studio and it performs flawlessly. There is an additional "acoustic" output that has lower gain that can also be used, but none of the equipment I have at my disposal can put out a satisfying level thus far, but it does work as it is supposed to, I just need a different preamp for it. I am also working on an amplifier setup for it also with an effects unit out of the box with all the signal conditioning I think is appropriate. This is the prototype. It plays great and I am currently playing it. I am looking to pass it on in exchange for the resources to get my tenor out of the pawn shop and buy a nice alto to electrify. I have already put together a design team to help out not only with the aesthetics of the R. Kane Varitone, but also with the website and marketing, so yes, this is a real thing if you were curious. Please support my endeavor so that it might be a huge success. This electric sax really does have the potential to change music as we know it. It was a long time in coming. It has been a personal pet project for me for many many years and has gone through many iterations before finding such a simple and wonderful solution. Can be operated either active or passive electronics, with 9V preamp with 5 band EQ. Can also be used in "analog mode" by plugging into Volume/Tone unit and play through 1/4 guitar cable/amp. Can also be used via XLR or 1/4 output from active control unit. Digital side can also be used as a passive pickup. Plugs directly into existing amplifiers. New idea in sax amplification. Finally, a "real" electric sax!! Be literally the first to own and play one. This is a prototype unit. Buyer agrees to not mass produce or reproduce unit for profit. Also since this is an experimental piece, I offer a lifetime warranty on the pickup.I will gladly give you your money back if you are unsatisfied. The horn itself, if it had a nameplate could sell for as much as this one is selling for. It is a really nice soprano. It is almost like a guy who worked for a major horn company acquired a bunch of parts. Horn has no markings, except my name and a number one.I plan to make more of these. You may be buying a piece of history.
