A fine antique french 18th century violin made by Chappuy circa 1770.A fine 18th century french violin made by the well-known maker Nicolas Augustin Chappuy in Paris circa 1770. The top is made of two parts of spruce, and shows very narrow and regular straight grain lines. The back is made of a single piece of flamed maple, the curl descending from the left to the right. The ribs, neck and head are of the same wood. The varnish is of an orange brown color, browner to the center ("à moustaches" in french). This instrument is in a strongly repaired condition. It has been restored at least at 3 different occasions during centuries, judging by the labels inside (Budapest ?, Chicago 1936, New-York 1966). We can presume that the violin was belonging to a musician of east european origin who came in the USA in the 20's or early 30's. The top shows many repairs, including a good sound post patch. The back shows also a some repairs including a long one, well cleated inside (not to the sound post). The button of the neck has been changed, in order to change the neck angle and preserving the original neck and head. The multiple and expensive repairs shows that the violin was well loved by its owners ! All the cracks are closed. The violin is quite representative of the good Chappuy works in the last quarter of the 18th century. The body is elevated in the Stainer manner, still very trendy at the time. The corners have been rounded by time. Despite its repairs, the violin has a lot of charm !The violin has been revised and set-up, including a rosewood tailpiece with bone fret, the matching chinrest, a Despiau bridge and Thomastik Dominant new strings set. The pegs are early 20th century and still fit nicely. On the back under the button can be found the original fire brand of the maker, "Chappuy à Paris". The coat of arms has disappeared with the button change. On the inside back can be found the 3 labels of the restorers, Nandor Brückner in Budapest, Gosparlin in Chicago and Nebel and Bro. in New-York.The violin comes with a certificate, describing the instrument and including a $4000.00 valuation.Dimensions are the following :LOB : 361 mm.Upper bouts : 161 mm.Middle bouts : 113 mm.Lower bouts : 203 mm.The instrument comes with a new rectangular case of quality. Insured shipping to USA $90 and Europe $50. A Nicolas Chappuy violin in good condition will worth $15,000 in the U.S. Don't miss the opportunity to play a fine 18th century french instrument for a fraction of this price !You can watch & listen to the violin being played : you just have to copy & paste the link in youtube : https://youtu.be/TKUYVkCRNuAHappy bidding.
