Offered here is a very rare and unique microphone by Sony, model C800 (non-G version). To my knowledge, only a few hundred of these were ever made before Sony seized production. At a later time they came up with the G-version, which is much bulkier and requires a cooling element, which makes it rather difficult to place at tight spots. G-version is also much different sounding - very bright and certainly not smooth and creamy as this microphone's sound is known for. A true collectors item.
You can hear what this very microphone sounds like on an alto saxophone in a live recording setting I made in 2015 at the following link below:
This mic comes with original PSU unit, custom cable, shock-mount, and aluminum case as seen in pictures. We have used this microphone for the past several years with great success at our home studio as well as on a few live performances - always making sure it was handled with utmost care. It's buttery smooth and sounds nothing like its modern C800G version, which to my ears is way too bright and because of it rather limited to hip-hop and pop music productions. You never see the non-G versions listed on ebay because there are indeed very rare. This is the improved version of the famous Sony c37A, with much lower noise floor and better specs throughout, using same capsule and mic transformer. To my ears is it up there with Neumann M49, U47, and the likes. Sony built these as a direct competition to Neumann microphones and they had certainly succeeded. The microphone was recently fully tested, including the tube inside which rates at 98%. The capsule has some small dust elements on it, but that has no effect on the microphone's sound. This microphone has been well taken care of. Please, note that even it is tube mic, it does require about 50-55db of clean preamp gain - depending of course on how loud the source is and how far you place it from the source. With a screaming singer, you may only need 30dBs of amplification.Buyer has 10 days to fully test the unit after which point we accept no returns. US shipping is $35.International shipping is $149.
