1920s Ludwig Marimba. Four Octaves C-to-C. Repair Project.
Estimated price for orientation: 924 $
Category: Mallet Percussion
Class:
Description Brand: Ludwig Country/Region of Manufacture: United States
Travel back in time with this vintage marimba. The stand is badged Ludwig. The bars are stamped Ludwig & Ludwig. I'm reasonably guessing it's from the 1920s. The bars are stamped Model 8879. It is a great old four-octave, 49-key marimba. It has been played so there is ordinary play wear all over, especially on the stand. It all breaks down so it's portable. All together, it weighs about 81 pounds. Here's the thing. About half of the tone bars don't fit the stand's posts perfectly. They are a full four-octave, 49-key set of tone bars, but the cord won't fit the stand's posts on both sides. As far as I can tell, one side of the tone bars should be re-drilled to fit the stand's posts. It is vital that the cord fits on top of the posts or the tone bar will touch the wooden stand. Perhaps the tone bars came from a different stand. I should probably re-drill them myself, but am going to leave that project to the next owner. About 20 of the 1/2" rubber hose grommets are modern replacements. If anybody has an old Ludwig catalog, I'd love to know more about this model! It's a classic old American marimba that sounds absolutely wonderful. If you do make an offer during business hours, please know that I typically respond to offers within the hour. Questions? It will be well packed with plenty of new 1/2" bubble wrap and shipped in a new 46"x19"x7" stout cardboard instrument box. Please check out my Ebay store, “The 1970 Time Travel Trailer,” for more cool vintage stuff, including a bunch of vintage guitars (and a few ukuleles, banjos, fiddles, mandolins and amps, as well as fiddles, brass, woodwind, and various oddball musical instruments and old instrument brochures & catalogs). And please check out our new YouTube TV show, “Musical Treasure Hunting,” to see more of our adventures searching for old musical instruments.
