Introduced in 1954, the Les Paul custom has been the guitar to own. The early 80s brought some cool changes to the line-up including super strong 3 piece maple necks and Tim Shaw pickups! The Case…   This beauty comes with its original Gibson case. The case has the familiar look of a late 70s case, but it is slightly different. The top has more of an arch to it and it feels stronger than the typical 70s case. We’ve never seen one with these exact features before so it is possible this was a very short-lived variation on this case before switching to all Chainsaw cases. The interior is red and most of the padding is still strong. All latches work, though it appears the handle might have been replaced at one point in time. There is a band name stencil painted on the back. Ah yes, a Gibson Les Paul Custom. Introduced in 1954, the Les Paul custom has been the guitar to own. The mid-70s brought some cool changes to the line-up including super strong 3 piece maple necks and volutes! The Guitar!   We won’t lie. This is one of the best playing and sounding customs that have been through the shop in the past year. While mostly all customs from this era are great, this one is a step above the rest in terms of playability and sound. Hard to put a finger on just what makes this guitar special, we just know it is. Well balanced feel at 10lbs 10.1oz with a 60s neck that has just a little extra to it than other examples This is a player’s guitar that has been well maintained though the years. It has had a new nut put on – though the G string slot is cut just a hair too deep so it does have a bit of a buzz on the open string when played acoustically. The frets have been redone with GOLD medium jumbo fretwire to match the binding. There are a few areas of light chips in the ebony fret board from the refret process that is common to see since ebony is fairly brittle. The guitar has also been upgraded with strap locks – Schaller style. Another small thing is the tuners have been restored back to original Gibson branded Schallers – no extra holes or footprints are left from the non-original tuners previously on the guitar. The rest of the guitar is original – including the ’81 pots, ’81 highly coveted Tim Shaw Humbuckers and the finish! What really makes this guitar unique is the color. The whole guitar was once a very dark wine red, but the top has aged into ore of a tomato/mahogany color that gives it a really unique and awesome look. Pair that with the aged golden binding and this guitar is quite striking. Please view the video tour to see the guitar in real time. The headstock shows typical string change scratches when viewed in the light, but maintains a clean appearance. The new frets show little wear and since they are jumbos, if you prefer smaller frets, they can easily be scaled down by your luthiers if desired. The truss rod functions flawlessly smooth. The gold hardware shows tarnishing on the tuners, pickups, bridge and tailpiece as show in the photos. There are no major gouges in the top of the guitar, just picking/polishing swirls from regular playing wear. There is some light wear to the top of the headstock on the back. There is also a tiny ding on the neck around the 9th fret position. The back shows signs of buckle wear, but none that breaks the finish. It is really only viewable in the light. There is a larger scratch by the input jack area on the body. Conclusion   This is the best custom on the market right now. The natural aging on this one is just perfect. It is the nicest wine red custom we have ever seen. This guitar has received all of the maintenance it will need so it is ready to go for another 40 years! Don’t let this one slip past you – it is THAT good. Put it on Lay-a-way if you have to!
