For sale, this CAD VX2 tube microphone, in great condition. Sonically, this is a world-class mic', particularly suited for vocal recording. It will compete very favourably with any of the "big ticket" vocal mic's. When these were available in the early-2000's, the new retail price was £1949, and this is reflected in the quality of the mic'.
The VX2 was a dual-tube, multipattern large-diaphragm microphone manufactured in the US by CAD. Two headbasket/capsule assemblies were included, offering two designs and sonic colors within one mic. The primary capsule measures 1.25'' (~32mm) inside diameter, 1.5'' outside diameter. Called the Optema, this large-diaphragm capsule had dual diaphragms and was capable of multipattern operation. The diaphragms themselves were made of 3-micron Mylar and were center-terminated. In the VX2, each side of the capsule had its own independent tube circuit and output transformer. The 12AX7 tube amplifying the capsule outputs is a dual-triode; each half was wired to one of the two diaphragms. The 12AU7 tube drives the output transformers. Read more:
The mic' is in perfect working condition, and sounds amazing. This is a bit of a "sleeper" mic', in the sense that it is very highly rated amongst those that know, but doesn't have the brand-name recognition of Neumann or Telefunken, and was manufactured and discontinued just before the current trend of everybody recording in their own studios or smaller spaces. The only very slight cosmetic blemish is on the front of the mic', where a small sticker had been placed on the mic', which took off a tiny amount of paintwork when removed, as shown in the photos. With the power supply and the flight case that it comes in, this is a fairly heavy item to post, so local collection would be preferred, or I can deliver within a reasonable radius of SW London. Postage is totally possible of course, at the buyer's risk and cost.
