The SG800 appeared on the scene in 1979. It was the successor to the SG700 which was released in 1976. The most obvious differences between it and the SG700 were the cream pickup surrounds and a smaller simpler motif on the headstock. Less obvious was the fact that Nato wood was used for the body instead of Mahogany the maple top was retained. Nato also known as Eastern Mahogany comes from SE Asia, a reliable and strong but cheaper wood. The SG800 also had a different set of tuners. Gone were the Gotoh style machine heads their replacement had Tulip shaped buttons.
