FE Olds "MENDEZ" Professional Trumpet4 3/4 inch Yellow Brass bell.460 Medium Large BoreTriggers on 1st and 3rd valve slidesCompletely Original ConditionNo DentsFamous Excellent Mendez ValvesSerial Number 621XXX- 1966 or soSays Mendez Trumpet FE Olds & Son Fullerton Calif engraved on bellThe FE Olds and Son company was started about 1912 and grew to become a major player in producing musical instruments. The company earned the loyalty of many major artists but probably none more famous than Rafael Mendez, a trumpet player that toured the country with his two sons playing to large and small venues alike. My wife was fortunate enough to have him come through her tiny community in South Dakota and left inspired enough to buy an Olds Mendez cornet which she treasures to this day.Mendez may have played the Olds Mendez cornet at times but he made his name and living playing this model trumpet. I believe it was introduced in the late 50's and continued in production until the company closed in 1978. One story I read online said that Rafael had Olds buff the valve pistons until there was some air leakage. That is the way he wanted his personal trumpet to feel and respond. Apparently Olds produced all of their Mendez trumpets this way for a short while. I can assure you that they were no longer doing that when this trumpet was made. The valves are still super fast and smooth. They also still make a nice compression pop when the slides are pulled against the valves. You can see by the pics that the lacquer finish is still in good shape with some signs of wear. I would rate the lacquer 90% plus. The bell is especially in great shape. Overall, the trumpet appears to be in completely original condition. It came to me with no dents and I do not see signs of dent removal. I love the rich color of the Olds lacquer.A very rare feature of these horns are the triggers on both the first and third valve slides to aid intonation. I am not aware of any other manufacturers offering it on both. Makes life significantly easier.Sadly, playing a Mendez trumpet does not make you play like Mendez. The good news is that it will help you play at your best. It produces a warm resonant sound that will melt a ballad but will brighten up and soar brilliantly into the extreme registers. It is not a light weight trumpet and the mass holds the sound together at the highest of volumes.Comes with what appears to be an almost new Gator hardsided gig bagin great shape and a generic 7c mouthpiece. You will want to audition several pieces to find your own best fit. These are extremely rare horns and this one is in terrific condition. I have been buying and selling trumpets for ten years and this is the first one that I have laid my hands on. I suspect I will have to pry it out of the hands of my trumpet players this week after quintet rehearsal. Your chance to own a real classic.I will ship well packed to the lower 48 states for $35 and elsewhere for actual cost by US Postal Service. Europe and Japan shoudl expect to pay about $65 for shipping- Australia about $90.No Reserve or Buy It Now on this one- Auction will set the price and High Bidder wins it!
