Tel: (316) 684-0291; FAX (316) 684-6858 WENZEL SCHREIBER & SONS German bassoon, made for C.G. Conn (Elkhart, USA), marketed as Conn's model “12R"  serial number 4750 ( mid to late 1950's).Having been the owner of Wichita Band Instrument Company since 1963 and also having been a shareholder in "Buffet-Crampon S.A." (parent company of Schreiber) for four decades and more, perhaps I can spend a few minutes to explain model numbers of their pre 1990's instruments.Schreiber's model S-54 was the basic bassoon....the one that we often see posted on EBay.  No high D keywork, but with tone-hole liners, brass caps on the tenons.   If you can live with the simple keywork, these can sometimes be good players for small prices.Schreiber also produced a model that was similar to the S-54, but without tone-hole liners, without brass tenon caps.  In the fifties they wore "Meinhardt" decals.   Like the S-54, but "stripped down" bassoons. In the 1950's, C.G. Conn made the decision to cease the manufacture of bassoons in the USA.  We occasionally see an American Conn bassoon (saw one last week, actually....), but we don't think much of them. Thanks to the low cost of labor in post-war Germany, the decision was made to import bassoons from Schreiber and have Conn's name stamped on the bell.  The bassoons were basically Schreiber's "Meinhardt" models, but with a few added features. The Conn 12R I've posted this morning is a really very clean example.  Original varnish is very good, nickel plate to the keywork is perfect.   All pads and corks are new, from our shop in Wichita.  Here's more information....Bell section has 99% original lacquer finish, no cracks or damage.  Bb key and socket ring are nickel plated, no wear to the plating.  Original bell ring, I believe.  Long joint also has 99% original lacquer finish, no cracks or damage. No brass tenon caps.  Normal rollers on C# & D#.  Nickel plate to the keys is perfect.Boot joint also has 99 % original lacquer finish, no cracks or damage anywhere.  Keywork has 100% good nickel plate.  Sockets are both brass lined (like on Schreiber's S-54 model).   Rollers on front Ab , F and F#.  No wood rot and both sides show no damage, no cracks, no problems.  No tone-hole liners (water tubes), though.Wing also has 99% original lacquer finish, no cracks or damage.  Tenon wears original brass cap (like on a model S-54).  No tone hole liners.  Keywork is to high C. Nickel plate to the keywork is perfect. Two original Schreiber bocals, both in perfect original condition, come with our instrument.  Two new Fox C1 & C2 bocals are possible, if you prefer, for the same price. Our bassoon is furnished with a new case and comes with all new pads and corks from our workshop in Wichita.BOTTOM LINE is that this one's a good and clean Schreiber bassoon, perfect for a high school student or an adult amateur.  Similar to Schreiber's basic model, but with some nice additional features. This one’s a “best buy” at $2250. Upgrade to two new HECKEL bocals for an additional $950! In January of this year, our small workshop in Wichita celebrated sixty-four years in business. We are not in the 1952 Wichita telephone directory, but we ARE in the 1953. We employ sixteen highly skilled full-time workers and enjoy, we’re happy to report, a sterling reputation for top-quality restoration and ethical transactions. We are not amateurs, nor are we a “back bedroom” operation. We would be pleased to furnish you with references attesting to the above. Wichita’s easy driving distance from Kansas City, Denver, Dallas or Saint Louis. If you want to fly here, we’ll even meet your plane!************************************************************************ Wichita Band Instrument Company is a small musical instrument emporium located in the center of the USA. We’ve been in business since 1953 and have had the same owner since 1963. Originally we were a repair shop that specialized in woodwind and sax restoration. Today we have 16 employees including eight of the finest repair technicians in the country. Virtually ALL the items we sell have been fully reconditioned in our own shop, although we do sell a few unrestored historical instruments each year. Due to the heavy demand for our services, we do few school repairs, and very few “walk-in” repairs. Wichita Band’s service warranty is the same as it’s been for more than thirty years: ALL new and all used instruments sold by Wichita Band Instrument Company come with our 24 month service warranty. It’s in addition to any factory guarantees. For two full years, we will repair or replace, whichever in our estimation is the more advisable, pads, corks, springs or other parts required, at no charge to the customer. In the event of cracked or damaged wood sections, we will repair at no cost to the customer or replace the section and charge the customer only for our net costs for the replacement section. Often, wood replacement parts are supplied from the manufacturer at no charge. The customer is responsible for shipping and insurance charges. Cases and plating finishes are not covered by our service warranty but are sometimes covered by factory guarantees. Wichita Band Instrument Company maintains a repair department capable of restoration work of the highest quality. Even though repairs are essentially “free” for the first two years, after that period has expired, we remain at your service to maintain and repair your musical equipment forever. It’s our “service after the sale” promise and has been since 1953! In the event that a customer requires service under factory guarantees or Wichita Band’s service warranty, the item must be returned to us and not directly to the manufacturer. Anything we sell can be sent to you for a short approval period without obligation. We collect NO SALES TAX, unless you’re lucky enough to live in Kansas. The customer is responsible for shipping and insurance and must pre-pay back to us any freight and insurance charges on returned equipment. International shipping is available. Returned items will be refunded within 2 weeks of receiving the item. We’re happy to send any instrument “on approval” for five days, but ask the prospective buyer to pay shipping both ways and to reimburse us for restocking charges (if you pay with credit card, 2.95%) on any returned instrument. Ebay authorized payment methods: PayPal or credit/debit card processed through our internet merchant account. Buyers outside of the USA are responsible for all import duties and customs clearance charges in their respective countries. We may refuse paypal and/or credit card payments from some countries. Other new, reconditioned, and vintage band instruments available. Our specialties are new clarinets from Buffet, Selmer or LeBlanc as well as re-built and vintage instruments from the same firms. Rebuilt crack-free altos and basses are usually available. We’re happy to correspond with musicians, players, parents and enthusiasts of all types. Written appraisals are always available, but please don’t write or telephone and ask “what’s granny’s baritone sax worth?” Do an Ebay search and you’ll be able to learn more than we could ever tell you! Feel free to call or e-mail for any additional information.
