Discussion about Depreciation of a Steinway Grand
FACT : A Steinway B will last 75 years. FACT : If you purchase a New Steinway it WILL depreciate in value to YOU over the first 15 years. This piano represents an opportunity for you to capitalize on that depreciated value. You be the Judge : Should you pay $77,000 for a New Steinway that will last 75 years or Save a lot of money and purchase this Steinway and have a lower investment for the same 75 year quality.
I purchased my first B in 1976 for $12,200. Today the same Model B is $100,000. The Steinway Dealer will tell you that a Steinway will go up in Value each year. What they mean is Steinway in NYC will raise the price of a Steinway by 4.5% each year. Example. A Mercedes Benz goes up in price each year. Here is a quote from an article on Luxury Depreciation.
Mercedes-Benz S-Class
Oddly, this model has taken one of the worst beatings in the depreciation department, with the ability to lose more than 80% of its value in five years. Again, it is an old, respected brand and even the experts can't figure out why the value has dropped so significantly. ALL Luxury Products Depreciate to the original owner that purchased the product new. I purchased a 1976 Steinway B for $12,200. In 1996 I sold it for $20,000. BUT, I was in the business. If you are to purchase a New Steinway for $100,000 ask the dealer to give you a written buy back amount of what they will pay you in cash 5 years from now. The Answer is $45,000. The Steinway B in 5 years will sell for $121,500. The open market for that piano from a non-Steinway Dealer will be $78,500. A dealer would pay you $47,000 in cash. So your depreciation is 53% over the first 5 years. Having sold New and Used Steinway's for 42 years I hold this to be fact.
