1978 Fender Stratocaster, Antigua Sunburst Well, this is a pretty rare find. Stratocasters were only available in Antigua for a short while from late 1977 to early 1979, and I can’t even remember when I last saw one as pristine as this but it certainly wasn’t in the last 3 decades! The story behind this guitar is that the original owner unfortunately passed away soon after acquiring it and then it didn’t change hands again until the 1990s, when it was purchased more as a desirable “collectable” than a workhorse instrument for gigs. Hence, after 39 years it still shows hardly any evidence of ever being played. Checking this over very thoroughly, I can find only two even trivial blemishes (see last 2 pics) A small indentation in the body edge just above the upper cutaway horn. As the paint appears unbroken, this could actually be a minor manufacturing flaw.A tiny speck (about 1mm across) on the pickguard where the black plastic is showing through. All else is absolutely immaculate and, needless to say, 100% original. The neck and all 3 pickups are date coded to week 37, 1978. The pot codes are unreadable, but clearly original as all the electrics are entirely unmolested from new.   “IT’S A 1970s STRAT, JIM – BUT NOT AS WE KNOW IT!” Quite aside from considerations of originality and condition, this is an exceptionally good 70s Strat from a player’s perspective too. 1970s, especially late 70s, Fenders can be quite a mixed bag in terms of quality, and weren’t highly regarded in their day for a whole plethora of often very good reasons – absolutely none of which seem to afflict this one in the slightest way. The 3-bolt neck is rock-solid stable. Weight is a very acceptable 8.0 pounds. Neither the microtilt neck nor the diecast bridge appears to have any adverse effect on acoustic resonance (the Strat I bought new in ’78 needed modding in both regards before it could chime like this one). The finish looks great. And the pickups sound sweet as they come, in fact I’d say for sound this compares very favourably with the “Hendrix era” Strats of a decade earlier. And typical of a 70s Fender, the slightly chunky C-section neck feels great and is fretted to a quality that Corona can only dream about. This is well set up with a low action, and comes with a near new Gator hard case.
