Very early OLDS TROMBONE Los Angeles CA 1923 Silver & Gold plated 0.5" bore case
Estimated price for orientation: 567 $
Category: Trombones
Class:
Description Brand: Olds
For your consideration, I have here a very early OLDS Trombone, highly engraved, silver/gold plated, and manufactured in Los Angeles in the 1920's. It does not get any better! The horn bears a patent date of April 2, 1912, the patent with the number 1,021,890 which was issued to G.E Riplet. I could not find an OLDS Trombone with a lower serial number then the one on this instrument. Interestingly, the bell section and the slide section have different serial numbers; the bell section bears the serial number 4,442 (see picture #18), and the slide section bears the serial number 4,752 (see picture #6). The bell section has no counterweight, tuning is done with a screw adjustment on the slide section rather than a tuning slide on the bell section. Bell and slide sections are a friction fit rather than a screw mount. The outside of the horn is engraved with ornaments depicting flowers and filigree ornaments all the way around the outside of the horn. Parts of the ornaments are silver plated, the rest is gold plated, see picture #32 (last picture). The inside of the bell is a goldwash. This high quality collectors instrument is stunning! I did not attempt to polish any of it and will leave that up to the lucky high bidder! The silver plating is black in some places and can easily be polished if desired by the new owner. The engraving bears the following writing: MADE BY F. E. OLDS
LOS ANGELES
CAL
PAT. APR. 2. 1912 The early OLDS logo is also part of the engraving, the trombone playing Bear, see picture #15. The bore is 0.5 inches and the bell has a diameter of 6.5 inches. The mouthpiece is a Vincent Bach Corp. Mt Vernon NY model 12C.
There are a few little dents and scratches on the Bell because one of the latches holding the slide section in place inside the case is missing causing the slide section to touch the bell of the bell section when packed in the case. I will make sure when I pack the instrument to put something in between so that nothing moves and scratches the bell.
I do not play any instruments but appreciate a quality instrument. The slide moves very smooth and I think that this instrument could be played, perfect for a swing or jazz band, or just to look at. This instrument is a museum quality instrument and it may be the only one of its kind still in existence! I have many other interesting items listed on eBay right now. To see my other items on ebay, NO RESERVE! THIS ITEM WILL SELL AT ANY PRICE! Terms and Conditions. Please read before you bid! (V.11.29.04)
