KORG M3 is a successor of Triton series of synth workstations, made in somewhat unusual form: rather than produce several models with different keyboards (61-, 76- and 88-keys) KORG made it as a single sound module (also known as M3M) and choice of three different keybeds (pretty much an empty frames with keys). It was a very cost efficient solution and removed hardware limitations: everything is in the sound module that can be controlled by any MIDI or USB keyboard! (It has no less than three USB ports, two type A (for media like USB memory sticks) and one type B (for keyboard). I've used it with an old KORG Triton, works fine and keyboard functionality is even better than M3's dedicated keybeds, because it also has four assignable knobs, in addition to S1/S2 switches and touch strip. Advanced USB keyboard controllers like Novation REmote SL allow even greater number of knobs and buttons to be mapped to M3 functions.Color touchscreen makes sound editing a breeze: everything pops up right there when needed, no need to dig into layers of menus and press cursor arrows zillion time just to get where you need. Touchscreen can also be used as X-Y touchpad, similar to Roland V-Synths and Novation controllers: just swipe your finger in any direction for more expression. There's also bunch of new knobs and buttons on surface, compare to Tritons, multi-functional sliders, velocity-sensitive pads, direct access to many functions that were hidden before. For example you can turn on and off all 8 effects directly with dedicated buttons (M3 has no less than 5 (five!) insert effects per patch, two master effects and one global effect, all programmable). Karma module and drums are also instantly accessible, exactly how it was done in Kronos later.M3 is super capable synth, it sounds awesome, watch video demos online. Sampler is second to none and Karma module is identical to one in Kronos (Karma is kind of advanced intelligent arpeggiator, letting you create a very complex and expressive melody lines, much more than a typical arpeggiator, even a polyphonic ones that Triton has). It's a very inspirational tool, I'd say on part with Yamaha Motif arpeggio libraries. It's hard to describe here, but believe me, you can create an original song (melody line and chord progression) in minutes just by browsing through preloaded patterns of KARMA. You can add your own, and there are series of how-to videos online by Stephen Kay, the programmer who wrote a code for both original Karma (used in KORG Karma and OASYS) and KARMA-2 used in Kronos and M3.
M3 can be linked directly to your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and will appear there as another software instrument, similar to Kronos and Yamaha Motif. Why use it that way? All audio remains in digital domain, no need to use A/D converters and extra inputs, and it also doesn't add any load to your laptop CPU.Another nice feature is that M3M has direct power cord, no AC adapters to break or lose (I've lost count how many times I was looking for missing power adapters for my other synths!)This is an upgraded EXpanded model, has the most recent firmware v.2.0.5, the best and cleanest M3 money can buy. I am selling the SOUND MODULE ONLY, no keyboards. The pics with keyboards are only for illustration of how it looks in real environment.
