Greetings and welcome to today's auction! If you have stumbled into this auction, you are in a very rare treat as this likely occurrence of "quilted figuring with broken ribbon flame" for east coast/eastern maple specie is about non existent- approximately 1 per 100,000! Secondly, this is old grown maple as it's best as it has the tightest annular growth rings I have encountered as the growth ring spacing is from 1/16" to 1/32" from ring to ring- about 14 ring lines per inch.....mind you this was taken outside of the log where the figuring as it's greatest. This billet is very unusual, very unique and truly is "one-off".........up for bid is for one (1) very rare "QUILTED-RIBBON FLAME", Eastern Maple (acer rubrum), Luthier Electric Guitar Billet! The "super compact quilt with the opposite side of broken ribbon flame" pattern for Eastern Maple specie is the rarest occurence you will ever find for red maple. This billet has developed a creamier sapwood color on the surface due to the patina over time. This billet is slab sawn/flat sawn cut. This has excellent tap tone. This is a must for those either doing a historical make-over* conversion, re-top on or newer LP instrument- you are looking at the most important ingredient in the equation for a once in a lifetime project! This type of figuring combo will probably surface rarely and this is a "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity if you are looking for something unique and extra special!
There is an LP single-cut outline top halve on both faces (non cut-away halve on the one face and cut-away halve on the second face) in order to show curl coverage, for scale and fit within a traditional LP single-cut pattern.
There is a wane at the outside corner (missing wood; the shortest one at the top end is about .950" long and the one at the lower bout is about 2.650" long, .160" wide and clear thickness at this area is approximately 1.640") & a ding at the outside corner (affected area is approximately 1/2" long, .175" wide and .225" deep). You can either surfaced this billet down to about 1.640" should you want to clear the outside corner wane before book-matching it. The outside corner ding/indentation will not be an issue as shown with the singlecut/LP outline as that area will fall out as it will be routed out for the neck pocket.
Dimensions are approximate: 20.125" long6.650" wide 1.735" thick (lowest point)
Specifications:Slab sawn/flat sawn cut. Sapwood 2 face and 2 side edges. Rough surfaced planed 2 face/1 side edge/rough sawn opposite side edge. Will require additional surfacing so it is perfectly flat prior to book-matching. Air dried/kiln dried/seasoned (currently at approx. 10 percent moisture content). Wood will need to be acclimated to your shops environmental conditions prior to fabrication so it is at workable moisture content. Ends sealed with Anchorseal*. Images photographed outdoors with natural lighting conditions. Wood was brushed on all 4 sides with shellac/denatured alcohol mix to help show color, grain and figured (if any). Physical weight is approximately 5.55 pounds.
* SIDE NOTES: this maple billet is about 95% clear with the exception of a wane at the outside corner & a ding at the outside corner.
