It has different effects on various woods, and on maple it's particularly dramatic. We've found that Spalted tops tend to be a little more mellow than "normal" woods, and have a smooth and balanced response. The swamp ash back also adds a detailed high end with good low-end content. Not your typical wood combination for this type of guitar, but very rich and complex.While G&L is best known for their MFD design pickups, they released their own set of traditional Alnico pickups a few years back. Getting the right balance out of Tele® neck pickup is always a challenge, but G&L did a good job of getting a nice mix of roundness and attack. Like a good Tele pickup, it's got a slightly compressed low end, a bouncy touch-sensitive midrange, and a clean, sweet high end devoid of muddiness. Don't expect the glassy punch of a Stratocaster®, as the ASAT Alnico neck pickup thrives on producing smooth round tones that are well suited to rhythm or soulful lead work. It takes gain surprisingly well, with a crisp crunchy character that sang with gusto through our Keeley Red Dirt Pedal.The ASAT Alnico bridge pickup is also a very faithful rendition of this classic design: Bright, twangy, impeccably clear, and easy to modulate. It's not overly icy even with the tone control full up. Once again, choosing mild amounts of overdrive provides a very dimensional sound with lots of sparkly high-end content that does not get overly sharp. Naturally suited to country picking, it's also great for roots rock, and players who dig Roots music and modern Americana like Dawes and Jason Isbell will find a lot of reasons to pick up this guitar.The neck on this ASAT G&L's 'Modern Classic' which is a boon for people that love the feel of G&L necks but seek "Fender-ish" measurements. It's a "C" profile with a slim taper, a 1-11/16" nut width and a vintage style 9.5" radius. This ASAT also features a Caramelized Ebony fingerboard -- dark with amber streaks -- which are available for as long as they last in the G&L woodshop. We don't find that ebony is "dark" sounding, and we love the smooth feel and percussive nature. We also dig the look. It's a great way to get responsibly sourced Ebony on your guitar, and as with any USA G&L the Plek® finished neck is very consistent with no dips, high spots or rough fret ends.This ASAT Classic Alnico has great dynamics, touch, and detail which makes it a natural for recording and session work. But its looks say "take me out."
