Up for sale, a 1973 Gibson Les Paul Recording model in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. The fulfillment of Gibson's renewed relationship with Les Paul in the early '70s, the Les Paul Recording model was the pinnacle of performance and tone for the man himself. Fitted with a pair of original low impedance stacked and angled humbuckers, the Recording model endeavored to provide a traditional palette of humbucker tones, but with settings that could also provide deeper bass and highs that can transition from silky, to bell-like, to searing. Able to operate in low impedance mode when plugging directly into a mixing console as Les Paul preferred or in high impedance mode via the internal transformer for more traditional operation through your favorite amp, the Recording model has a host of surprising innovations and tonal tools. With phase switching, a three-way tone selector, and Decade switch (a secondary treble knob) this guitar works exactly as intended and is viable for a wide range of genres. The guitar weighs in at 9lbs 14oz. We've had this Les Paul professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings and dialed in for optimal action and intonation. The three-piece mahogany neck has a fairly slender medium C shape at the nut, growing notably deeper and filling out with generous shoulders as you move up the fretboard. The rosewood fretboard features pearl block inlays and original frets that are firmly of the low/flat variety Gibson used in this era, although these frets are remarkably clean and have more roundness to the crown than most. The guitar plays effortlessly up the fretboard with no buzzing or dead spots, and the guitar currently shows only the faintest wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3. The original nut is present and measures 1 11/16" in width. On the headstock, all of the cosmetic touches of this model are accounted for, with the split diamond inlay reserved for Gibson's top-tier models, the original truss rod cover, and stock Grover tuning machines with metal tulip buttons. All of the electronics work as they should, and the wiring harness is untouched, with CTS pots that date to the 20th week of 1973 (which also corresponds to the serial number for conclusively dating the instrument). There is moderate patina on the original harmonica bridge and tailpiece while the pickup rings retain clean chrome sheen and the stock plastic parts and reflector cap knobs are in excellent shape. Cosmetically, the guitar shows only one small quarter-sized spot of buckle rash on the back along with a few expected small nicks and finish scratches, but overall this is a very clean and well cared for Les Paul Recording Model. The finish is 100% original with zero touchups or overspray and the guitar is structurally sound with no cracks, repairs, or serious wear of any kind to report! The original Gibson hardshell case is included and also in remarkable shape. All latches work, the plush purple interior is minty, and the "Gibson" silkscreen on the exterior is present.
