Here you have a complete package. A Slingerland Banjo Mandolin from the 1920's. I found a period resonator and a period case to go with it. I got this instrument several years ago. In October of 2016, - it was cleaned, - the vellum head was tightened, - the neck lined up so the action is low, - we changed the nut to a fossil mastodon material, - we changed the bridge to fossil mastodon material also. - new strings were put on. -I made an armrest from a beautiful piece of knobby Sambar stag antlerThen it was played, and played and played. It was just returned to my from the luthier in Oberlin where I had - a new set of strings put on, - a simple cleaning - the frets worked on to eliminate some buzzing- another set of the action to bring it down as low as it could be. The instrument plays well and sounds just like the 1920's! All the work was done by a professional luthier here in Oberlin, Ohio. The body is laminated with bird's eye maple veneer. The neck is maple and the resonator is also laminated with a bird's eye veneer. The resonator has some classic belt buckle rash on the back, obviously many years in the making. The case is a period case and the instrument fits in snugly. The case is used and has some dings. Both of the latches and the snap are in good working order. This is a nice complete package for a collector. The instrument has not been defiled or altered. It's just hard to find all the pieces assembled in one place, cared for and played. It is also meant to be played. The fossil mastodon nut and bridge give better vibration transmission through the head and the neck. The vellum head may be older, but it is tight and holding up nicely under tension. I am building several other instruments and this one just has to find a new home. I keep the ones I have time to play. This old girl isn't perfect, but she's been around for quite a while. She looks good and sounds awesome.
