Here is a vintage (serial number 522423) Holton H-281 "Farkas" Double French Horn. The "Farkas" model was originally developed and designed by Philip Farkas in the 1950s. This particular horn is in very good condition, and plays very well. The valves move well with very good compression and the slides all move of course. The Holton 281 is similar in many ways to the iconic to the Holton 179 double french horn. The main differences are the screw bell configuration, and the materials that the horn is made from. While the 179 is made from white brass (also known as "nickel silver"), the 281 is made from a combination of nickel silver, yellow brass, and bronze. This gives it a warmer, fuller sound than the 179. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few small dings and some light scratching and etching throughout the horn. The engraving on the leadpipe reads “Holton H281 Made in U.S.A.”. The minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a somewhat worn lightweight backpack style screw-bell case, and a mouthpiece in good condition. How the horn plays: Full, dark and rich sound. The tone is warm, smooth, and colorful. The horn is very responsive and resonant. The horn has a very good dynamic range, capable of a sweet, mellow pianissimo without breaking up, and a strong, edgy fortississimo without blatting. The Bb side timbre is slightly brighter than the F side. The low and high registers speak well and play with ease. The horn plays smoothly across all of the range.
