This is a 1992 (serial number 42 432763) Conn 8DS Double French Horn. The 8D is Conn's large bore professional symphony double horn, and is built from solid nickel silver in a Kruspe wrap style. This horn also features a screw-bell configuration, so the bell is detachable for easy storage. The valves move well and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there is some light pitting and scratching in isolated areas, particularly on the bell flare and finger buttons. We purchased this horn from another repair shop. The horn had been brought in for some repair work and a cleaning, and somehow the shop managed to lose the valves, valve hardware, and some miscellaneous parts from the horn. (!???) We had to manufacture and/or fit new parts to the horn, so a few parts on the horn are made from yellow brass and are not original. The horn plays nicely, and is a bargain due to these non-original parts. The minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. The bell engraving reads: “CONN/ 8D/ USA.” This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wished for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a Conn backpack-style screw bell case in good condition, and a mouthpiece in good condition.How the horn plays: Full, round, and warm sound. The tone is smooth, dark and rich. The horn is responsive, and the F and Bb side timbres match well, with the Bb side being slightly brighter. The horn has a good dynamic range. The low and high registers speak well, and the horn is smooth playing between those registers.
