This is a vintage (serial number 549396) Holton H-180 "Farkas" Double French Horn. This instrument was originally developed and designed by Philip Farkas, is in very good condition, and plays very well. The valves move well with good compression and the slides all move of course. The Holton model 180 is built using yellow brass which gives the horn a warmer, fuller tone than nickel silver, but otherwise this model is identical to the Holton 179, having the same wrap, bore, and large bell throat. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are small pings throughout the horn, as well as some light, isolated scratching and pitting.  The bell engraving reads: “HOLTON/ ELKHORN. WIS.” The leadpipe receiver has “H180” stamped on it. The minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a somewhat worn hardshell case, and a mouthpiece in good condition. How the horn plays:  Big, warm and full sound. The tone is smooth, dark and clear. The Bb and F side timbres and intonation match well, with the Bb side being slightly brighter than the F side. The horn is responsive, with a good dynamic range. The low and high registers speak well.
