By adding the middle Stratocaster® -- but in this case Legacy -- pickup this type of guitar is capable of the classic Tele sound plus the funky middle and "out of phase" tones typically available only with the Strat. Finished in the beautiful Clear Red finish his particular ASAT Classic S is both classy looking -- and with a rear contour --comfortable.This guitar comes with G&L's newest neck profile, the Modern Classic. Slimmer like the old "Slim C" this Modern Classic has an optional 12" radius and a 1-11/16" nut width. The string spacing is the same as their 1-5/8" Classic C necks, and the extra width is there to help prevent string fall off. Players who like an American Fender® neck will take to the Modern Classic. The Plek'd® frets have nice rounded ends, and thin tinted satin finish has smooth dry feel that does not get sticky when the going gets hot.The original Tele® neck pickups was meant to mimic a bass guitar tone, and while they've gotten more usable over time, many players find them too compressed and murky. G&L did a nice job creating a blend of attack, warmth and roundness. Like all good Tele pickups, it's got a touch of compression, but a nice round tone and good clarity with none of the high end flabbiness of lesser pickups. Don't expect the glassy punch of a Stratocaster®, as the ASAT Alnico neck pickup thrives on producing smooth round tones that are well suited to rhythm or soulful lead work. It handles distortion nicely too, and remains crisp and articulate provide you don't slather on tons of gain.The ASAT Alnico bridge pickup is also a very faithful rendition of this classic design: Bright, twangy, impeccably clear, and easy to modulate. It's not overly icy even with the tone control full up. Once again, choosing mild amounts of overdrive provides a very dimensional sound with lots of sparkly high end content that does not get overly sharp. It's great for roots rock, indie rock, and is one of the signature sounds of music.The addition of the Legacy middle pickup adds the slightly scooped, gritty blues tones you'd expect from this position, but with a mild 6k resistance there is enough midrange content drive pedals without sounding brittle and sharp. With its 5-way switch, the in-between positions on Classic S have some spunky out-of-phase cluck, but are a little fuller and more punchy than the typical Strat. When you consider tone, fit, finish and feel, G&L rises to the top as a great USA guitar value.
