Up for auction is a very nice Clarence Peterson ViolaThis is a large Clarence Peterson Viola made in Washington D.C. in 1960. The original tag is signed by the master and also the Master Willis Gault, of the Gault violin making school. There are no repair labels or any other marks to be seen inside the back of this viola. There aren't any papers for this viola. The viola measures 17 7/16" long, top bout is 8 3/16' wide, middle bout is 5 11/16" wide, and the bottom bout is 10 1/4' wide Ribs measure 1 1/2" high. The total length of the viola is 28 3/8". The back is a two piece, it looks like quilted maple, and a two piece spruce top. The neck is heavy flamed maple and his own beautiful designed peg box like old Italian work. The varnish is a soft luster not too heavy, and is a beautiful Golden Toast Color, high lighted by a red brown color. There are no visible cracks, chips, or varnish touch ups.It is in Pristine Condition, the same as new yet 50 years old. Old enough to have that mellow tone old wood offers, and who knows how old the wood was when this instrument was made. The outline shows his personal work and has that very old Italian school look.He made is own personal box pegs. Also along with his beautiful work he made a wood case fit to perfection. The case lining is original but could be a little better grade of material. There is no bow as someone stole the $2000.00 French bow. If you are looking for a rare old huge deep tone viola to sound in any music hall or anywhere else to play, this will absolutely meet your expectations. It will need a setup to your satisfaction. It is easy to play and has it's very own tone color. It would be a very nice fit for someone collecting fine American Eastern U.S.Violas. A shop might ask $18-20,000 plus The asking price is $13,500.00. My health compels me to sell. There are no returns as I have given a good detailed description and pictures.
