It's no easy task to take a totally familiar shape and craft a truly unique guitar, but the Knaggs Kenai is all that and more. The Knaggs Tier 3 Kenai in Satin Black lacquer takes the classic single-cut design and improves it both sonically and ergonomically. The design, fit, and finish of the Knaggs Kenai maximize the natural resonance of the instrument, creating a musical clarity that is unique among solid body guitars.

But if you are thinking that the Knaggs is essentially a re-badged PRS, think again. Joe and the team at Knaggs put a lot of thought and design time into the Knagg's collection, and while the Kenai is evocative of the classic single-cut design, it plays and sounds nothing like the "other" guitars from Maryland. As with all Knaggs guitars, there is a deep natural resonance and clear bell-like tone on every string. The focus of the Knaggs designs is to maximize the natural acoustic tone of the guitar. They've succeeded mightily thanks to top-notch materials, a deep set neck joint, and location of the proprietary bridge design. Before you even plug in, the Kenai will strike you as dynamic and rich, with a snap and response that you usually don't get with a set neck guitar. But does this really matter? In a guitar with brutally hot pickups that overpower any contribution from the guitar itself, maybe not. But with the Knaggs you hear the whole guitar, not just the pickups. Players who heretofore would avoid humbucker guitars for their lack of clarity and sensitivity will find the Kenai a refreshing experience. We plugged into our trusty Dr. Z, which is typically set up for a single coil ASAT. You would think that with the amp essentially EQ'd for a Tele, the Kenai would sound dark and muddy. Not so: The Knaggs sounded open, clear and lively, and even the neck pickup was percussive on the wound strings with great separation on every note. Single coil clarity with humbucker girth is the best way to describe the Kenai, and with the broad flexibility afforded by individual volume and tone controls, you be amazed at the range of colors you can squeeze out of the Kenai.Kicking up the gain demonstrated the ability of the Kenai to maintain its voice even with fairly heavy distortion. Working with both a Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive and Lovepedal Kalamazoo, the Kenai was tight, punchy, with a singing quality to the high notes that was smooth and articulate. The SH-1 bridge pickup was balanced, not overly sharp, and very harmonically rich and full. And often on guitars like this using the neck pickup with a lot of gain is a no-no. But the Kenai does not turn to mush, and instead it produces violin-like lead tones that have enough edge and definition to sound truly musical and dynamic. The fact that the Kenai uses garden-variety Duncan's should not scare anyone away. Good guitars are designed, not just assembled, and the Knaggs demonstrates how critical the overall design is to the quality of sound. On guitars like this, we really like the option of having individual volume and tones controls. True, it's nice to have a master volume, but the tonal benefits trump the convenience of a single volume control. The best way to experience the potential of the Kenai is to place the pickup switch in the middle position and explore. The balance and interplay between the two pickups, volume and tone controls allows for tremendous creativity and the ability to quickly make minute tonal adjustments.Despite the rock 'n roll image, guitar players are pretty conservative when it comes to their instruments. For the something new to gain acceptance can take a very long time...or maybe never. And with the conventional wisdom telling us that only old stuff can sound good, the road to commercial credibility is very treacherous indeed. Knaggs is on that road and deserves to be heard. The Knaggs Kenai is an exceptionally sensitive and dynamic humbucker guitar, and to play the Kenai is to hear and feel things differently, with a greater connection and sense of sonic detail. We've genuinely connected with every Knaggs that's crossed our path, and Knaggs is living proof that the best guitars being made are being made today. We are an authorized Knaggs dealer and this is a brand new guitar with full warranty, tools, tags and certificates.
