Looking for more fullness and output without a loss of clarity, Leo Fender combined a low resistance (inductance) coil with a relatively strong ceramic bar magnet. While that sounds a lot like a P-90, the MFD's have their own unique voice.The MFD pickups have the touch sensitivity, dynamics and slightly scooped midrange of great vintage single coils, but with greater tonal flexibility and output. The neck pickup has a glassy quality that is clean and articulate with a nice slightly hollow Strat tone on the upper frets. But it's broad frequency response and strong low end makes it very versatile, and it can easily mimic a rounder Tele or even a Jazzmaster-ish vibe.The bridge pickup is spanky, twangy and bright, but with an overall sweetness that keeps it from sounding tinny or abrasive. The clarity is exceptional, and makes for great picking or ringing rhythm work where you can the each individual note. Both pickups play well with pedals, and the strong output and wide frequency response make for great harmonic content, overtones and overall rock-worthiness. Just the ticket for blues, roots and modern country.G&L's Dual Fulcrum Vibrato bridge pivots on two hardened steel posts and allows both up and down pitch bending. Those posts are anchored in brass body inserts for extra stability and sustain. While most ASAT Specials are hard-tail, how does the bridge affect the tone? There is a slight loss of low end punch, but also an extra measure of shimmer and clarity. It's not exactly brighter, but a little leaner, with a lot of sonic detail. It makes this particular ASAT a killer rhythm guitar, but those MFD's can really kick up some dirt too. So don't be shy....The ASAT Special is Leo Fender's evolutionary continuation of his ground-breaking Telecaster. Not just another vintage knock-off, but a highly flexible instrument that provides enhanced single coil tonality with modern output and versatility.
