Made in the original Gibson factory in Kalamazoo Michigan, Heritage guitars combine old-world expertise and new-world consistency to create true works of musical art. New owners and investment have brought better quality, consistency, and faster delivery times. With more marketing savvy and social media presence, the New Heritage is modernizing without losing their personal touch.The inspiration for H-137 was a "budget" model for players who could not afford a true Les Paul®. The H-137 is simple in concept but nothing about it screams budget. As with any Heritage the finish quality, fretwork, electronics and hardware are all top drawer. The long tenon set neck is a late-50's profile with approximate thickness of .870" at the first fret and .960" at the 12th. It's a nice combination of chunky feel at the bottom, but not too thick at the upper frets. This is what we'd call a great riffing neck; something you can really grab onto and pound out some classic blues and R&B.P-90 pickups have always been overshadowed by their more famous humbucker sibling, but other than sometimes being a little on the noisy side, they don't get the respect they deserve. The Lollar P-90's are moderately wound and bring out all that is good about a P-90: Solid attack, strong midrange presence, and high end clarity that is not too sharp. When properly made, they blend single coil clarity with enhanced output. And while they don't have the scooped glassy character of a Fender® pickup, they drive pedals nicely and don't get shrill or brittle.At the neck the Lollar P-90 (~8.2K ohms) has a warm, soulful character with plenty of attack and more midrange clarity than most humbuckers. It can be jazzy or a little raunchy depending on your setup. With overdrive it takes on a creamy nature with a midrange that really sings. P-90 bridge pickups have an unfair rep for being dark and snarly, but that's usually because they are wound too hot. The low-9K Lollar is fat but balanced, and it's got plenty of high end detail and sparkle that allows you to cross over from rock to country in a blink (remember, Keith Urban is big on Jr's). Stomp on the gas though and you've got plenty of roots-ready crunch that is great for classic rock, blues, country...or your own sound.Both pickups together have a snappy, clucky tone that sounds a little rockabilly, a little Beatles, Byrds, and is a pretty close cousin to a Tele on steroids. Close your eyes and you'll even hear early Led Zep. There's a lot going on here, and the individual volume and tone controls provide a myriad of tonal shadings. In our opinion P-90's are at their best when they're not wide open, and the best tones are often some blend of both pickups.A good P-90 guitar is the "third sound" that many players are missing from their collection. The Heritage H-137 has the feel and vibe of a custom shop guitar, but is also a highly versatile instrument that will work its way into a good chunk of your repertoire.
