The original Fender Telecaster® Thinline was a great concept that never developed the following of its legendary solid body predecessor. G&L has kept this great style of guitar alive with the ASAT Classic Semi-Hollow and are now introducing a true G&L Thinline! Featuring the classic layout and pickup configuration of Leo Fender's groundbreaking Telecaster®, the ASAT Classic Thinline is being made in limited numbers and features a semi-hollow mahogany body.
This special ASAT Classic Thinline features the following:Semi-Hollow Mahogany Body w/ F-hole - 6.8 poundsHimalayan Blue finishG&L 'Modern Classic' neck, 9.5" radius, 1-11/16" nut widthLight tint satin maple fingerboardBone nutMedium jumbo fretsG&L split and drilled tunersG&L MFD neck pickupG&L ASAT Classic "Ashtray" bridge pickup3-way pickup selector3 ply custom parchment pickguardPlek® laser guided fret finishingDeluxe tolex hardshell caseMade in USAList price: $2100Test gear: Mesa F-50, Mojotone 4x10 pine cabinet with Jensen P10R, C10R, Fender Blue Frame mixWhy go Semi-Hollow? Besides light weight, the semi-hollow design has some very nice benefits. In our opinion, these benefits are further enhanced by using a Mahogany body. Mahogany is a fairly "dark" and resonant tonewood that has been used most famously with Les Pauls and other rock guitars. When you hollow it out and mix it with a bolt on neck and MFD pickups, the results are wonderful. Tonally, it fills out the midrange of the guitar, adds just a touch of roundness to the high end and makes the guitar less "peaky". The attack is bit softer than a solid ASAT, but the MFD pickups are very touch responsive and there is more than enough bite available just by varying picking style. Overall it's a great blend of warmth and cluck with a fatter midrange and good clarity. If you like the "idea" of a Tele® neck pickup but never seem to actually like them, you'll really dig the ASAT Classic MFD neck pickup. Full up, it's clean, bold, with a very even response across the spectrum. Low notes are big and round with a generous percussive feel, and the high end is clean but smooth. Roll off the volume just a tad and the classic round, slightly hollow Tele neck tone appears, but with better clarity, less compression and a more satisfying attack. This is a pickup that does not necessarily reveal its most interesting tones full up, and players will be rewarded handsomely for using their volume and tone controls. Punching in a Keeley Oxblood pedal produced smooth lead tones that are more creamy than crunch, but don't get flabby or mushy. The ASAT neck pickup has a good strong low end that remains tight even at higher gain settings. The ASAT Classic bridge is a Tale of Two Pickups. Played clean it is sparkly with plenty of twang on tap, and there is a slight "give" to the attack that lends the notes a nice springy feel. Hit it with some gain and this pickup becomes an awesome classic rock machine with gobs of overtones, harmonic complexity, and great sustain aided by the string-through body and brass saddles. It's truly great lead pickup; more articulate than a humbucker, and enough bottom end to lay down tight defined rhythms. This guitar comes with G&L's newest neck profile, the Modern Classic. Slimmer like the old "Slim C" this Modern Classic has a 9.5" radius and a 1-11/16" nut width. The string spacing is the same as their 1-5/8" Classic C necks, and the extra width is there to help prevent string fall off. Players who like an American Fender® neck will take to the Modern Classic. The Plek'd® frets have nice rounded ends, and getting the right setup is a snap. Overall playability is top notch, and in our years of handling G&L, the quality has never been better. The ASAT Classic Thinline is still is early production so keep a look out for other finishes as they become available.
