In years of collecting vintage guitars, I have bought and seen a lot of very cool things. This is probably the coolest guitar I have ever boughtYou might have noticed 3 unusual features on this guitar:1. A fully painted sunburst neck
2. Knobs that you have never seen on any other Fender
3. A decal that says "Aztec". This is the only known prototype in existence of the Fender Coronado. Fender decided to call it the Aztec. One other Aztec (finished in Candy Apple Red) was produced but it was most likely destroyed or rebranded as a Coronado.
This guitar was made in 1965 under the direction of Roger Rossmeisl who became head of R&D at Fender when CBS took over. This guitar is an incredible piece of Fender history. It is a testimony of the changes that occurred at Fender when it was sold to CBS in 1965. I was able to track down the history of this guitar. I contacted the grand daughter of the original owner. I almost fell out of my chair when I learned that this guitar was given by Fender to Lee Dominguez. Lee used to own one of the biggest music stores in Arizona. He also wrote the Fender Course books. You can see him pictured with this exact guitar in these books. The guitar is 100% original except for the pickup which might have been changed by R&D. This piece of history does not only look cool, it plays great. If you have any question, feel free to contact me.
