The Montreal has been a real success for Godin, and at NAMM 2017 they unveiled this new upgraded LTD model. This particular model features a Bisgby Tremolo for a classic look and a whole lot of pitch-bending fun, and TV-Jones Classic PickupsThe pickups on the Montreal LTD are TV Jones Classic humbuckers. If you're not familiar with TV Jones -- and these look familiar -- it's because they are inspired by the original Gretsch Filtertron pickups developed by Ray Butts in 1959. While these are not single coil pickups, they are wound to a very low resistance - 4k in the neck and 4.8k in the bridge. This provides wonderful clarity and articulation plenty of dynamic range. The neck pickup is warm, with a percussive midrange, and smooth, jazzy low end. We wouldn't call this a lead pickup but with a little bit of gain the treble response is sweet and full of sustained harmonics. The bridge pickup is only wound slightly hotter than the neck, but it is all you need to kick things up a notch. The low end is snappy, wholesome and downright gritty when you dig in. If you're looking for rockabilly or Memphis blues, this is it. Even through the bright channel on the Deluxe Reverb, it has plenty of attack without harsh treble peaks. Single coil snap with propped up midrange, and the sturdy low end of a humbucker is the secret behind the TV Jones pickups. Rolling off the tone control provides a smoother jazzier side, but the all-Cherry wood Montreal never gets particularly woody or dark sounding. The spruce center core effectively manages any feedback issues, so you can crank this guitar without fear of it howling. The Godin bound mahogany neck with Richlite® fret board has '59-ish proportions, which is another way of saying a comfortable medium-C shape. There is a high level of fret finish, and the polished ends blend nicely with the bound fretboard. For those not familiar with Richlite, it's a wood fiber composite material that is a great eco-friendly alternative to Ebony. While the Godin Montreal Premiere LTD does not break any barriers in modern guitar design, it's an attractive and nicely crafted instrument that is well suited to pop, rock, country, blues and jazz styles of music. While the TV Jones pickups certainly give the LTD a certain "stylistic voice," playing it through several different amps and cabinets, this guitar can change a lot of minds in regard to how much ground you can cover with a semi-hollow thinline. It's not just for lounge lizards, and the Godin Montreal Premiere has something to offer everyone.
