The Sennheiser MKH-405 was released in 1964 as the first balanced condenser mic in high-frequency-technique which was developed by Sennheiser (the MKH104 & 404 were the very first but unbalanced).
At that time this technique offered big advantages. The MKH`s had a very good bass frequency response for a small diaphragm mic and the s/n ratio was better than with other mics. The need supply voltage is 12V DC (T-power). The MKH 405 sounds very linear but also very warm and natural. I would say it is near to the later Neumann KM74 and KM84.
It is perfect for overhead or ambience recordings but you can use it also for all kind of accoustic intruments. Mainly it was used in the studios of the German broadcast companies. The new price was near to Neumann and Schoeps microphones back then. This mic pair is in very good condition. The serial numbers are not consecutive and not even nearby but the mics were selected soundwise for working as a perfect stereo pair. The original Sennheiser box is included as well as two adaptor mic cables. With these the mics are usable with 48V phantom power.
